Ok, so I have a bear on my property. With the reduction in deer tags here, I might buy a bear tag. (black)

Would hunt him from a tree stand over bait.

How do I get started??

Best way to set up??

12 gauge slug or ML ok??

Gut same as a deer???

Any and all advice appreciated.

Thanks.

I always hunt bear from a tree stand. Better chances that they won't smell you up there. I have a bait station set up, a 45 gallon drum chained to a tree about 20 yards away. I personally use archery with bear, with my Win 30-30 hanging from the tree just in case. I just don't trust bears...If they decide to come at me, the 30-30 is there. We start baiting 2-3 weeks before opening season, once a week, then keep baiting 2 times a week during the hunting season. Bait wise, the stinkier the better. We use day old donuts, fish guts, liquid smoke, old deep frier greese etc. There's really not much to it. Once they find the bait, they keep coming back as long as the bait is re-filled on a regular basis. Once they become comfertable, you can be up in the stand, and take your sweet time shooting them. They just hang out and eat, plenty of time to mark your shot.
