Just curious on a general opinion on this subject . Talked to a young hunter today , He is about 25 . Bow hunts for bear alone . Is usually in bush for up to a week . Camps in a tent . But no back up ie 12 gauge , spray , . The only thing he takes that could be a weapon , small spade , hatchet and hunting knife .
I don't know as I,m new to Bear hunting and so far only in group of three or four guys . and back up is usually nearby when sleeping . But to go alone ... and just the bow ... Most other guys I,ve talked too take a 12 gauge as back up ..

Got the GPS coordinates for his camp? There might be some good gear in that neck of the woods.

Your a Big Help to calm this guys nerves ;)
You know, some people go into the bush to get away from the pressure of every day life.
Just because the guy says he is going ''Bow Hunting for Black Bear doesnt mean he is actually trying his hardest to take an animals life.

Then again some are more ''Bush Savy'' than others and not afraid of a Black Bear.

Both the kid and I have bow hunted sheep with no other weapons in the tent and sheep country is grizzly country. Never once lost a minutes sleep over it, regularly go after black bear and have harvested many with nothing but our bows. Fear can be a very debilitating emotion, and usually quite irrational.

My wife and I have spent weeks at a time far out in the boonies with no firearm. Been doing it for 40 years. We've met a few bears over that time, you're bound to, but they almost always ran. The ones that didn't, were ones we met in provincial parks, and even those hung back until we left the camp.
We were never armed with anything more than camping/canoeing tools. The chances of meeting an aggressive predatory bear, at least, a black bear, are remote indeed.
We do keep a clean camp, and we won't use one that isn't clean when we arrive. We also hang our food pack at night.

Dealing with a wounded bear would be my concern if I were to try hunting with a bow alone, and for that reason, I'd have a backup arm.

Once met a family of Black Bear on a trail on Cypress Bowl in West Vancouver.
They where munching on a bush full of black berries.
The proverbial Mexican Standoff.
They watched us, we watched them and we circled around the trail face to face watching each other and when we all got back to the part of the trail we wanted we carried on our merry way.
No shots where fired nor where any bears or humans injured in this strange yet interesting situation.

He,s taken one a year last three yrs running

Started bear hunting last fall(thus far unsuccessful) and carry my 20ga pump loaded with slugs or Norc 1911(45-08)as backup to the bow. Pain in the ass hauling bow and other kit plus a shotgun up into the stand so naturally the pistol is the preferred backup option.
