Spring bear season is nearly upon us and I an going to do my first bear hint this year. Not wanting this first foray to be a solo expedition I have spoken to a couple aquaintaces who will set me up on a bait and film the hunt and know a couple others who will help me in a spot and stalk hunt. Which of the two hunt options do you all find more rewarding and or productive? Pros and cons of each? It will be my first hunt for bear and I will be rifle hunting. Thanks all

With baiting you have alot of prepping work and there will be cost invloved, where the stalking can be very challenging. You say you have some help, so baiting might not be such a inconvience if you all can split the work?
I think the Stalking would be much more rewarding, just something about good old "hunting". Either way keep us posted!
We are stating to plan our August bear hunt up in cochrane, we will be baiting :)
Goodluck on the hunt!
Cheers

The local terrain and vegetation have an impact. Its virtually impossible to "spot and stalk" where I bear hunt. You can't see further then 100m just about anywhere, and im limited to the property we own. Baiting is the only option.

Hunting bears over bait should be called, "Bear shooting," and not bear hunting. There is no hunting about it.
The Boone and Crocket Club, started many years ago with a theme to promote sportsman ship among hunters, required a hunter entering trophies to make a declaration that the game had been taken in fair chase.
How can anyone possibly think that killing a bear over bait, was taking the animal in fair chase?

where do you draw the line and who defines fair?
Seeing as certain states had to go as far as banning drones for the purpose of hunting, who determines whats "fair"?
where do you draw the line on technology(that makes things unfair)? only hunt with muzzle loader? or only a cross bow? or only a compound? or only a long bow? better yet make it
"fair" and only use spears that we have to manufacture ourselves after scerounging for the perfect stick....
with the surpluss of black bear and them becoming a nuissance, and little extra meat in the freezer and rug on the floor dont hurt.

I THINK the people baiting bears are doing it in dense forest areas more or less as a way to be able to watch a bear for a good while to make sure it is not a sow with cubs.

Its better to have bears feeding off your bait barrel than on young moose calves. Both hunting methods are fun but if you aren't taking part in the selection of sites and the actual baiting operation, you're missing out on the hunting baited bear experience.

It's still a fair chase hunt....no different than hunting whitetails feeding on a green field...or fowl feeding on grain fields. :)

Last spring I set up a bait, then spot and stalk shot one the very next day in a clearing about 3 mi. from my bait......go figure. Took me longer to set up and take down my bait than it did to find a bear, sneak up on it and shoot it.

I think if bear were coming into a bait it would be very enjoyable to watch them as well though.

In BC it is unlawful to bait.

Most "spot and stalk" hunts here start with a spotting from the truck, then stalking, sometimes as far as the front or back of the truck.

While I live on the prairies the bush here is so dense that it is really difficult to spot and stalk for bear. Would like to but bait is probably the best way to go.

After paying for tags and equipment and the drive north, id rather sit by a baited spot and see what happens then spend my time sauntering arounds the woods

How would you hunt them in thick brush where visibility is limited to under 100m?Keep in mind you cant drive a truck around either.

Sorry guys, I wasn't trying to spark a fair chase debate. I was just trying to get a little help in my decision making on the style of hunt I want to try for my first black bear. FWIW I am an hour or less from opportunities to hunt either way. Baiting is legal here as well the way I see it baiting allows a person to be somewhat more selective (geared more toward trophy style hunting perhaps), while spot and stalk being more traditional offers more "thrill of the hunt". As I said being my first hunt I wilk be hunting with a more seasoned bear hunter. Thanks all for the input.

Agree with you ......... over bait = bear shoot. No hunting involved.

Maybe the definition of the words 'hunt' and 'chase' have different meanings for those that like to remain comatose for long periods of time, waiting for something to 'fall into their lap' ...
