Got my bear tag for this season in ontario...

Dont know anyone who hunts bears, how the heck do I learn how to field dress (cut up for storage)?

Any websites, movies, etc that can help? Whats bear meat taste like? how do you useually cook it? stew of some sort? Very intrested in getting a small one and making a rug or trophy head.

Any tips would be awesome, please and thanks

Have a blast

for gutting just do the same as a deer if your getting a mount be carfull on the cutlines and given that your a newbie leave the paws and head alone if your getting a mount. once you have the innerds removed cut the paws off at the wrist joint(use your knife to cut the cartalige) and the head at the base of the skull and hang froma hoist or tree till its just off the ground grab ahold of the higest point of skin and pull down sorta like pulling cling wrap off a roll take your time so you dont tear anything and you should have it doen fairly cleanly. once this is done start either quartering up or boning out and wraping.
if your getting either a mount or rug done talk to your taxidermist before hand and find out what he wants done to the hide/cape to prep for him and follow it exactly once the skin is off get it to him FAST.
he'll likely recomend leaving the paws and head on as well as it is very delicate work and can be butchered beyond repair easily

Hey man

New hunter or old hunter?

IF your new try and find someone to walk you through the steps! I think baiting sites is the standard in ontario so get baiting. Depending on where you are, the season starts august 15 or i think september 1st.

I hear bear meat is sweet, sweeter then beef and I think people usually make hamburgers out of it, steaks.. I'd imagine stew would be good!
