Bear hunting: Tips For A Beginner?

My .112 is simple, hunt the green areas, thake your time & injoy where you are. If you see something, slow down watch it and injoy. If it has cubs you will be in for some great viewing. Some of my best bear hunting has been the watching of the cubs. If you decide to shoot, any good deer gun will do, I try to bust the shoulders. I have lon relized the kill is not prize, the hunt is. Have a good time & good luck AJ

In the Kootenies you have an advantage, walk the gas lines and hydro clearings, find yourself the freshest scat you can and set up on the area for last light and day break. Otherwise do what most others do, drive around and spot one. ;)

Don't get tto excited about morning hunts. The late afternoon and evenings is when most of the bears seem to be feeding and moving. Power right-of-ways and cutlines that have been seeded with clover are good bets. Look for scat, and set up somewhere downwind 75 yds away. And be quiet, bears can hear really well.

I was just curious, does anybody know if any black bears actually exist in Eastern Ontario?
I have the option of getting my hunting liscence in the first few days of May.. I didn't want to get it during school, but I thought 'I am not going to bother waiting to August to get my bear tag when there are no bears within 2 hours of me in Ontario. So I thought that I might as well get my hunting liscence, pay the $125 and try to find one in Quebec in May.
Your thoughts? I am in Ottawa by the way, so Quebec is close to home.

there are lots of them around Petawawa, to the north of you, they hang around the base, but make sure you not trespassing there;)

there is few people here that live at the base, they may give you some pointers on where to go

Head over to the west kootenays area if you want bears. Ive been here for 8 months and seen more bears than I had around cranbrook in the last 5 years.

hmmmthe Cariboo has a decent amount of Black bears..most I seen was with my twin brother 35 bears in one day from dawn to dusk in the Cariboo Mts.EAST of Williams Lake..we ended up shooting a large 6 foot blond bear that we nick named Farrah Fawcett...it WAS A MALE..lol I find the off colored bears dont get as big as the black colored bears..

Any time after April 20th up here is bear time..look for south slopes, wet areas for skunk cabbage and fiddleheads it also needs to be somewhat quiet bears dont like lots of activity..and yes given 24 hours in a day they " can " be found any time however my favorite is the last hour of daylight..and often the BIG boyz dont come out till literally last light..opposite for grizzly bears who love the early AM..

Another piece of advice is, to quote Ruark, to always "pay the insurance" if you're not 100% certain that your first shot has put the bear down for good. It's good advice for any animal, but paticularly so for bears. A second shot is cheap, and a taxidermist can sew two holes as easily as one.

It never ceases to amaze me how a wounded (fatally or not) bear can run off without leaving a blood trail to follow. All that fat, hide and hair really soaks up blood like a sponge.
