Last night, I got all hunting stuff ready for this morning. My kids stayed up a little late so I let them sleep in this morning. Oliver rolled out of bed at 8:30AM and got dressed to go. I grabbed my gear and tried to be quiet but ended up waking everyone else up in the house on my way out. We stopped and gassed up and stopped at Tim Hortons for a coffee and breakfast sandwich. I planned on driving down the Killarney highway, South of Sudbury, more or less for a walk to see what we could see. This was not a real serious hunt but it was more about getting out. We were about halfway down the Killarney highway when I glanced off into a clearing and thought I spotted a bear in the back along the edge of the tree line. I turned around and drove back past the clearing and did see the bear still in the back of the clearing. Oliver and I piled out of the truck and I shoved a 9.3 x 62 cartridge into my CZ. We snuck into the clearing and the bear was still in the back but he was quartering away out of the clearing. I ran to the edge of the clearing set the trigger to “hair trigger”, took a deep breath, found the bear in my crosshairs and touched the trigger. The gun went off and I heard a “wump” and flipped arse over tea kettle. Then he stood up and ran around in a circle twice like a dog chasing his tail and collapsed. The 286 Grain Hornady did it’s job, I hit him at bottom rib and it exited the opposite shoulder cutting the heart in half. This was the first animal I took with this rifle and I was impressed at making that off-hand shot at about 100 yards. Oliver was quite impressed and watched the field dressing process. I showed him how to tie off the rectum and everything. It was a great morning. We were back at home at 11:00AM. It wasn't my biggest bear by far but it was fun having my 7 year old son standing beside me when I made the shot.
