Harrass, maybe, but at least in this provice, (bantario) harrassing wildlife carries the same penalty as hunting them out of season. (Ontario FW act)
There are allowances, however, for wildlife that is destroying crops or property that includes destroying the wildlife. Given of course that you follow their doctrine in doing so.
Look into your BC wildlife act before doing anything.
For certain, if you're doing anything be sure to document the damges caused, including pictures before doing anything to your bear.
 
I think if you phone the RCMP and make a complaint, they have to do something about it. Ask them if a child has to be killed before they do something. At the very least, it has to be investigated.

A couple of weeks ago we had a bear in town. Ran right through my back yard. RCMP was called and the bear was relocated.

When I lived on the island, I saw the local constabulary kill a couple of bears.

This is the electric fence that I use for my horses. It's rope with copper wire woven through it. It does not break easily- in fact I've never had a break in the last 11 years that I've used it. The plastic insulators break before the electrified rope does. Hook it up to a solar powered fencer, making sure it's grounded properly, and it will light up any bear that touches it.

And, it's a Canadian product.

I have never actually seen the bear but all the neighbours have. There is bear shi*t on top of my shed for pity sake, 3 piles!!! It is like he comes along and takes a nap then gets up and moves along.

I will send a hard copy letter. The bear is going to be more than a nusiance when a school kid gets mauled on the way to the bus stop in September. I would cut my own throat if I didn't at least say something to someone who is supposed to take a course of action and a neighbour was hurt or killed.

BTW, when I called the office hotline, the woman on the other end told me that they would come and get it and shoot it (like that was a bad thing) and then another bear would just move in, in another 4 or 5 days. My immediate thought was, "well shoot it too". To my knowledge they only logged my call.

Oh and my dog, who hates all men, and bites the neighbour man whenever he gets the chance, is too scared to venture more than 10 feet from the back door day or night. :(

I did talk to my wild bush man uncle today, who said to spray Febreeze around. I will try that before I make an investment in electric fencing, but it may come to that.

An electric fence needs to be baited so the bear gets a jolt before he has time to walk through it. This works well in bee yards. If it was in my yard I would just take the end off an electrical cord, hang a couple strips of bacon from the live wire and let the bear be the grounding rod.
 
electric fencer units can be purchased at farm supply stores. in order to work properly they must be well grounded and properly insulated for best results .they use high voltage but low amperage and the more powerful ones are at ten thousand volts . you do not want to touch one of those as i found out . do not use power directly from an electric cord or some one may be killed .
 
Electric fencing maybe not the best solution in an urban environment, however, with kids, cats and other domestica wandering about!

I'm over in Hatzic, north of the cemetery. If the bear comes around again and I can get a pic I'll post it. The dogs will wake us all up if it comes around again. The security cameras only got a few dim images but I might get lucky with my regular camera. I'm told there are signs posted down along 7th Avenue in town, though.

I've moved my garbage bin to the upstairs deck for now. The bear can't get up there unless it can put up a ladder :rolleyes:The remaining bird feedes are (I hope) too high to reach.

Better wild animals than wild neighbours, however!

I don't have any bird feeders up. It is a good thing too apparantly as a woodpecker is hanging around. And I had a rat problem until I sold my chickens and them poisoned the rats to death. The raccoons have seemed to moved out while the bear has moved in. :p

One thing after another in this neighbourhood. I somwtimes long for the simple days of grow-ops and meth labs lol :p

I've had 4 kinds of WP out here- downy, hairy, pileated and red-breasted sapsuckers. I had seed bars out for them all winter. Haven't seen them for a while, though. No raccoons for some time (much to the relief of the cats) and few rats, which is probably not surprising.

One thing after another in this neighbourhood. I somwtimes long for the simple days of grow-ops and meth labs lol :p

Great stuff, indeed. It doesn't even break when it wraps around a horse's neck....
 
I had a bee yard in Nanaimo and the bears never entered. If found in the yard they could be shot for destroying "livestock" or if outside the yard, harvested on a tag. The fence trick is five strands of wire, very tight, with a two foot strip of chicken wire held in place with the steel posts, nailed to the ground, fresh battery every three weeks, and a good ground.
