Bear into deer apples-Am I screwed for this deer season?

Got a photo of a large blackbear (will try and post some pics tomorrow) in my deer apples, a week before deer season!

This was in the middle of the night, so I don't think I'm in any danger of seeing him, but there were far fewer deer in my camera this week too.

Is he going to keep the deer down, should I not have dropped more apples?

I set up a feeder last year that a bear took to. Big guy, droppings everywhere, and kept knocking the feeder over to get into it.

I didn't see a single deer after he took to the site.

Plenty before that....

Is bear season still open where you are?

only problem is the bear will cause the bait to disappear quicker. bear and deer have been sharing apple orchards for years

Good point. I think I'll buy a tag just in case. Hopefully have some bear and deer meat this year!

Try Second cut Alfalfa - its like cat nip for deer and bears don't bother with it. I have had good sucess with it..

What he said. I grew up in NS and my dad still lives and hunts there. He has shot deer off apples that a bear has been feeding on but he had to use twice as many apples. Some years it's just easier ( and cheaper)! To shoot the bear.

I've had bear in my carrots at the before or at beginning of my deer season.. only to disappear completely. I figure they hibernate at about this time of year.

I am in southern Ontario, my feed piles have been mostly ignored so far, thee are a LOT of apples around, but they should be done soon. Hoping to get my tag filled this year, just looking for a youngish one to fill the freezer.
