It doesnt matter what I have in my hands out in the woods. Im gonna go down swingin' if another critter feels I should be it's next meal.

rifle or bearspray? take both. they are both a false sense of security. Could I pull a can of bearspray out of its neoprene holster, and get the stupid plastic safety off quicker than I could get a rifle pointed in the bears direction without missing it?
maybe. I would give the bearspray more of a nod than the rifle.

Remember when this stuff came out? people didnt understand how to use it, and some of them were using it as bugspray and spraying their kids HAHAHAHa. Just a quick question are bears not attracted to hot spicy things?

By the way go with the .30-06

With that said, what do you guys use for mosquitoes? which bugspray is best?? They are friggin nasty out my ways!!!

I would take whatever your more proficiant with. To stop a bear its all about where the shot goes. Or take a tommy gun and some cigars. I think I read an article where US service men in alaska used them to good efect(something about shooting them many times was nessasary, because of the weak round) :)

Maybe someone should write up a definitive (LOCKED) post on Bear defence using all the latest info from our previously mentioned Bear defence expert authors, and leave it stickied at the top...so we don't have to read this question every few weeks.

I agree. For once and for all, please post that a healthy dose of birdshot (#6 or #7) to the eyes is the most robust form of bear defence there is. Period.;)

Never mind bearspray. Use hairspray, on yourself, so that when the big bad bear eats you, your hair will stick together and it will be more identifiable in the feces of the murderous bear.

Y-a-a-w-n!

I feel a fish defense thread coming up!
Which is why you bought that 45-70 last year?

Shark Defence threads on the Freediving/Scuba sites are almost as popular as the bear defence threads here.
Don't they make spears with heads that take a shotgun cartridge for such purposes? There's your answer, then - in or out of the water.

Speaking of spears, where's Gatehouse on this thread?

:)

I'm sorry already. Just let it die please....

Don't be sorry, it's all in good fun :D :D

People here won't admit it but they LOVE talking bear defence. Why? because it involves guns. Start a thread about moose-in-rut defence and you'll see people lining up to post they're ideal gun... ;)

I think I need to find a good rabid squirrel defense gun :)

This comment reminds me of South Park - "It's coming right at us!!"

Never mind the bears- beware the PIGS. Here's a story from today's Telegraph (June 2)

Farmer attacked by 47st pig
(Filed: 02/06/2006)

A farmer was recovering in hospital yesterday after he was mauled by a 47st pig.

Geraint Roberts, 49, was trying to move the Landrace boar into its pen in Brynsiencyn, north Wales, when it went berserk.

It pinned Mr Roberts against a tractor and bit him on the back of both legs, his back and left arm. One of the bites nearly severed an artery.

The attack only stopped when Mr Roberts' wife, Nerys, turned a hose on to the pig.

Her husband was taken to Gwynedd Hospital, in Bangor, where he required seven hours of surgery after the attack on Sunday.

Mr Roberts may be released from hospital today, but will be unlikely to work for two months.

His son, 19-year-old Gwyn, said: "My father is lucky to be alive. I think if he had been on his own, or my mother had not thought to use the hose, he would probably be dead.

"I had a pitchfork and shouted at the boar, to get him away, but it was no use.

"We've no idea why he turned violent. We've had him for about a year and he's normally quite placid, but you can never trust a boar, just like you can never trust a bull.

"My father has worked with pigs all his life and this is the first time anything like this has happened."

1 stone = 14lbs, so that's a 658 lb. porker! I bet Geraint will be taking the old 12-bore with him from now on (if he's still allowed to own one.)

Time to start a new thread:

What gun to use for Zombie Bears with Shark DNA Defence, can I use my bullpup (or is it illegal) and how hard to get a silencer for it?

Should be good for 1000 pages or so......
:D

Ryan

I figure, a 870 with a 3 shot extention, loaded to the max with 1 slug, followed by all 000 buckshot. Slow it down with the slug and then just plow it down with quick shots of the buckshot. Get ready to reload, in case it's a sow with zombie bear cubs... their shark DNA prevents them from climbing the trees, they just go in a frenzy when they see food... ugh... scary... :D
