Bear protection when fishing in N. Ontario

Hypothetical : Would you take a 12 guage along if you were going fishing in the middle of no-where?????:confused:

Just curious to see what peoples thoughts are on this issue. I am going on a spring fishing trip. We will be ATV into the hinterland to fish. Chances are we will be doing the shore lunch and taking a few brookies back home with us. With the growth in the bear population I am worried about having/smeling like fish.


The obvious ansewer would be "dont go" but I feel i have as much right as the bear to be there.

going fishing in the sticks probably would take two pump guns. If one breaks its a fancy club, maybe be I am paranoid. No I am not just dont like black bears sneaky go behind your back and always hungry, christ it sounds like a liberal, at least a bear is not going to rob you blind.

I think you just answered your question. Suggesting anything else would probably be against the boards rules.

I am not suggesting people do anything!!!!!

I am simply asking wether the bear problem is as bad as people say and wether they would take measures to protect themselves and their families

If I've interpretted the hunting regs correctly, small game season is open all year (in most parts of Ontario)... and as long as it is NOT Deer or Bear season, you are allowed to carry larger caliber weapons such as a 12 guage or center-fire rifle. During Bear/Deer seasons, if you only have a small game license, then you can't be carrying anything bigger than a .22.

Assuming you don't want to use the 'wilderness protection' clause to justify carrying, you simply need to get your small game license. BUT, if you're using your hunting license to justify carrying a firearm, then you're bound by the additional requirements for carrying & storage (e.g. must be in a case after dusk, etc...).

Where does it say that in the regulations? maybe i missed something but either 1. if you have a small game license IIRC there is always something open. or 2. If there is an open season for large game and you have a suitable firearm then you should have a license for that game. or 3 If you have no hunting licenese than you can say you are target shooting (and check with the MRR if you want)

I was told some time ago, by an Ontario friend, that you should carry pepper spray in the bush. That way, when the bear charges, you open the can and spray yourself - because some bears enjoy spicy food too!
 
I spent most of last summer in Ontario working forestry contracts (Red lake, Sioux Lookout, Armstrong) and I would advise you to carry a firearm based on the ridiculous number of black bears that are running around. Somebody in that province should pull their head out of their ass and open a spring season before more people get hurt.

This question always seems to bring out varying opinions. I called the CFO in Ont. and asked if they had any issues with me carrying in Northern Ont. for camp protection, and their response was no problem, go right ahead. I even asked about the specific time I am heading north as there is a no hunting season even for small game, and she said that the only problem may be with MNR.

I called MNR and they stated that as long as you can show you were not hunting, then no worries. So it all seems to boil down your ability to prove you were not hunting. I think most MNR officers would understand a gun for bear protection, especially in the boonies.
 
if your in the boonies as long as you dont have a round up the pipe when carrying i dont see a problem with it any time i go fishing in the back woods i always carry either my 303 slung on my back or something similer just remember if you do shoot a bear that has become a problem either notify the MNR right away or OPP as to the circumstances and situation and no they wont let you keep the carcass and remeber when telling them how the bear atatcked it was in a pack of like 10-20 smart bears and you had tried fend them off with bear bells but they just ignored them and lunged for you so you had to shoot
 
Bring a stick if you are scared of bears. I go up north all the time and never carried a firearm. Sure I couldn't buy them before but even now I can buy one and I wouldn't bring it for protection. They usually run away when I see them

As long as your hinterland is not to far north and spring is early trout season you may be ok. The small game licence is not valid from June 16 to August 31 on a line roughly south of Algonquin park. Check with the mnr for exact details.
