well..... i use a slightly different option. i built myself a wildcat round based on the WSM cases. necked up to 416, a 12 twist barrel, and 500 grain cast bullets at around 1700fps. mine was set up on a TC prohunter, but any action that handles WSM cartridges would work well. just swap out the barrel. Hornady will make you the dies, then just fireform and go. my next project for it will likely be a BLR takedown with a custom barrel. it will be a great bear gun. my 2c :)

45/70 which you don't want, so I say 450 Marlin. Personally I use a 30/30, ..out of respect, after shooting bears, elk or moose with my 30/30 I always whisper into the dead animals ear, so his soul may be at peace.."sleep now, you were shot with a uber magnum"... it allows them a little dignity.

I also try to keep the gun out of sight as well,.. there is nothing more depressing for a bear than seeing a 336 Marlin, seconds before he tumbles..

A 30-30 is very effective on black bear. I don't know where people get the idea they need a heavy rifle to kill bears, they are easy to kill.
And a wounded black bear will present about the same danger to you as would a wounded whitetail deer.
I'm not joking or being funny, that is the truth. Wound a black bear and he does his level best to get away from that thing that hurt him.
I hope I didn't rain on your picnic, but just telling it like it is.

My vote goes to the 35 Whelen. Big impact and a 225 or 250 grain should only leave 1 hole in the hide.

Lots of bears are taken with a 270 Win, 7Mag, 308, or 30-06. My neighbor's kid took a huge, old boar last fall with his 280.

I believe myself, that I would find the appeal for anything above .30 calibre, is the operator ability to cast thier own brand lead bullet, with thier own favorite brand of powder.

Other than that, a 30-30, .308, or 7X57, would be fine with factory ammunion, for any creature not a grizzly bear on this continent.

Some of you folks think you need to spend a lot of money. :D

Methinks a $140 Mosin Nagant M44 Rifle would do the trick, Russians have been hunting Their much larger Brown Bears with 7.62x54R for well over a 100 years.

And you would have a handy fold out bayonet just in case yogi wanted to get in a parting chomp. :D
