I tried a quick search but didn't find anything. I take it that the vitals are located slightly more forward on a bear. So shoot tight to the shoulder and low ? Is that right. Trying the baiting thing for the first time so i wondering if the shot placment is different. Where do You shoot on a quartering away shot. Thanks

1/3 to 1/2 the way back depending on angle, aiming through to the far opposite side leg.

If broad side tight behind the leg (pit area)..If it is a bigger bear I like to take his front shoulders out, so I don't have to blood trail after dark. Having to leave an animal overnight with the guts it renders it useless as food IMO.

If bow hunting, wait for the quartering or quartering away and tight behind the elbow.
With rifles I always go for the high shoulder shot, breaking the shoulder blade and spine.
That always call for short tracking job, if any. Remember, these guys can get to you even with a bullet through their heart!!!

Cheers,

Unless you are very close, I think a head shot is a bad idea on a bear. The head is massive, the brain pan is narrow and shallow without much of an index for placement. A bear`s head is also often in motion. I agree that a bear`s reaction to a shoulder shot can be pitiful, but given that they are often taken close to heavy cover, a shoulder shot should prevent their escape. If the shot is made on the length, rather than broadside, the spine is a good choice too.

I like to slap'em on the azz first and then shoot him from behind as I see him rush off into the bush ... HAHA ... the bush I love that! :D

Most bear hunting around here is done over baits so it makes it very easy to drop one between their peepers. Otherwise, I try to nail them right in the armpit.
