Bear Spray???

i've heard from people that have used it and it does work to a degree but i'd rather use a gun to get rid of a bear at 20 paces than the spray

and when you use it it's kinda like taking a leak outside don't spray into the wind

Last summer a few buddies of mine where sitting around after an afternoon shift, and decided to test out their bear spray on our local bears (yep beer was involved). Anyhow, these clowns chased a sow with her three cubs for over an hour, without getting close enough for a test shot. We think it was their laughter which kept the bears moving. It about the stupidest thing I ever witnessed. Maybe this year they will get their chance, we had bears raiding our garbage again just last night. The dog is growling again....bears are back.

You are right, your buddies are clowns beer involved or not. Harassing wildlife is against the law in most places that I know of.........

I hope that sow if harassed again munches on your friends for a while, they deserve it.

Bears are a problem here. MNR does nothing about them. Police say if you shoot them you will be charged. Last summer, we had a large male roaming about. He put a few charges on my neighbours. I will not step outside at night without my four legged bear alarm. That little spaneil loves to bark at those bears. To the point we can not let her out alone, as she will put a chase on the bears. A bear would make short work of her 35 pounds of furry!.

Ha ha youtube!....now that would be something!

As for harrasing the wildlife....I assure you that it is the other way around. We have had bears here 6 of the last 8 nights. There are no crops yet of the neighbours fruits trees. Sheds and garages broken into...what will it take? A home invasion of the four legged kind?.....Give me a break assh0le! That large male was in my garage last night, ripped through my door like it was not there.

Say what you will, but the way the above statement is worded sounds like animal harasment to me.

You said it that way, not me......

I gassed a 200 pound black bear a few years ago at a distance of 3 paces . Straight in the face and it totally f*cked him up . I buy a new bottle every year for myself , my son and my wife . They get test fired with a one second blast to make sure they work . I'd rate bear spray much higher than hand to hand combat . All things considered a gun is a better choice but for some people in some locations a gun isn't an option so even though spray may not work 100% of the time i'd recommend it before going hand to hand .

As an ATC holder, I carry a 225 gram can of bear spray in a holster, right beside my Ruger Super Redhawk .454 Casull.

The pepper spray expands your options and shows that you are a good law abiding citizen who understands non-lethal methods in animal defense.

Shelton wrote that the first 1 second of spray from a can may be less effective due to encapsulation of the pepper agents by the carrier medium. He recommended that the first burst from a can be a longer burst to ensure that the pepper is exposed.

according to literature that is not a good thing as once fired they hose may become gunked up and then not work again a second time when left to dry out and so. in the future maybe buy an extra can and take it out and let everyone have some shots with it so they know what to expect, but once used the manufacturer recommends they be thrown away... even if it was for a short blast.

Gary Shelton says bear spray is effective 85% of the time when used within its designed parameters, usually 8 feet or less before being deployed. is that effective for the average person who in most situations will never encounter a predatory bear or a bear guarding young or a kill site ?? I say no.... butin the other cases such as a casual run in and such yes I believe bear spray works well and is effective.

gary shelton also states a gun is only 95% effective in stopping a bear.... so a gun is not the end all be all, shot placement and having a cool head rule the roost.

8 Feet is waaaay to close to be to a Pis#ed of grizzly.

Rifle "spray" properly directed (into the central nervous system) is 100% effective.

A vital body shot may not turn a charge that is true, but does anyone really believe that a 12 bore slug is only 10% more effective than spray?

I really don't like slugs for hunting, but even I think that a slug at point blank is pretty devastating?

True. But it beats zero feet. :)

But this is a problem with bear spray uses, most users have trouble holding fire till the bear is close enough. Anything over about 15 feet is iffy, depending on the product.

Again - depends. IN bc a few years ago, a guy got two solid hits in with a 338 - bear still mauled him within an inch of his life and he'd be dead if his buddy didn't get him out of there pronto. As it is, the big story was he'd survived with those kind of injuries.

However - in reading about successful uses of firearms, i've noticed that with them also the secret to success seems to be holding fire till the bear is very close in. In those cases tho, 'close' means more like 15 - 20 YARDS rather than feet.. a substantial difference :D

I'd rather have a gun,. But bear spray has it's uses.

I have been that close.

Anyone in this world that thinks bear spray will work with a really pissed of grizz at that range is off thier rocker. Once a mad grizzly bear reaches 8 feet from you and full on charging, it has one thing in mind only, to kill you.(or atleast to stop you in your tracks)

Anyone who can stand calm and ready to spray liquid pepper until a pissed grizz is 8 feet away has way more balls than I will ever have.

Most people would blow thier load long before a bear ever got that close.
