Bear with a shotgun slug?

Considering a .72 cal 1 oz or better slug how dead do you want to kill something? This and buckshot used for backup on DG worldwide...................Harold ****** The only question is range and accuracy as missed animals arn't stopped

ive been hunting bears with the 12 all spring. I wanted to use my bow, but i dont have it tuned yet, so my plan is to get within bow range (under 35 yards) and pop one with the shotgun.

For deer, no question! Modern sabot slugs and rifled barrel have made shotguns a real b game killer. My buddies group in Southern Ontario piles up 15-20 a year with slug guns.

I see no reason why even a rifled slug couldnt take a black bear within 50 yards. They arent particuarrily tough, and the hole will be big so blood clogging a small bullet hole wont be a prob.

I can easily do a 5 inch group at 100 yards with my rifle sighted smooth bore 870 barrel, with cheap Win slugs.

I used a brenneke slug out of a rifle sighted, smoothbore 12 gauge on a wild boar once.
At 75 yards and using about six inches of holdover, I put the German slug right through both lungs, no problem. He demised in less than one minute, and fell exactly where he was standing when shot.
The shot was a full through & through, and due to deep snow the slug was not recovered.

I compared two rem 870 express magnums - mine rifled, the other not.

Using plain jane cheapo slugs, the rifled barrel was of course more accurate. Inside of 100 yards it's easy to get good if you practice. Past that you seem to have to take a little more time to learn how she works, as the slug seems to drop a lot. I also have rifle sights on mine, which helps with consistant aiming.

The smoothbore did well, but not as well. Seems the slugs just weren't as accurate through it, especially as ranges opened up. Also, not having rifle sights added to this.

Haven't gone for bear, but took a deer with my rifled 870 last fall. Very clean kill, and deer was on the ground before I could re-establish my sight picture.
