To settle an argument with a friend...will a high velocity slugger from a 18" magnum 870 be enough to take down a black bear?

Just wondering as thats the only defence gun on our farm, where we have lots of bears in the area.

Thanks, that's exactly what I figured. Just wanted to make sure if a bear is too close for comfort the shotgun wouldnt just hurt his ego.

Oh yeah

I have taken several black bear with 2.75 " Remington slugs in a Wingmaster 870; 18 inch barrel. They have all been one shot kills. They just don't get back up.

Black bear = deer. Not very big, not very tough (unless pissed off), and easy to kill.

I'd recommend something with a little more penetration if you're going after the big grizz

A shotgun at close range is a wicked--wicked weapon. A 12 ga. slug is an ounce of lead you're chucking out there.
I once killed a bear with no.8 birdshot-20ga. damn near took his head off. Bear was on one end of deck --I was on the other--deck is 12ft long.

Oh please, make it stop. :D

Seriously though I use single shot .22 with birdshot for blackies. Just aim for the eye. Your 12g slugs will be fine.

Maybe where you are from, but a 6-800lb black bear is big and tough enough as far as i am concerned. Black Bear also has the highest bone densisty of all North American animals.
And as far as deer go, i have seen deer still running with no blood left in em, and some running while stepping on their guts because of a bad shot.
Tell me that's "not very tough".
If you are going to give info to a sincere question, please don't mislead the person.

From what range are we talking? Every weapon, load and person has their limitations.

HELL YA... That bear is dead...

Hey Spray... Sounds to me like your buddy might have a case of "magnum-itis"... a common affliction found in the "shooting sports" where an individual truely believes that if the cartridge doesn't say "MAGNUM" on it somewhere, it is unable to take "large" game...

IMHO, "magnum-itis", was created by the gun industry to get us gullable shooting sport enthusiasts to buy a new gun... Seems to have worked... And no, I'm not saying the short mags etc, are not worth looking at, I personally have a "soft spot" for the 300 WSM... but I don't own one "yet"...

Cheers
Jay

I shot one with a slug (Federal 1 1/4) @ 10 yards over a bait. At the shot it spun around 3 times (biting at the wound) and dipped over dead. I found the slug flattened on the off side it was probably the better part of 1.5" round. The heart and lungs were red jello. Prosper is right pure lead slugs are not the best penetrators, Federal loads the barnes expander all copper shotgun slug that would be an interesting animal, but I think you'd need a rifled barrel and a bank load.

I would be concerned about taking on a shoulder on a big bear with a pure lead slug, Accuracy then drop will limit your range.

It's all comparitive. Of all the 'big game' species, deer are probably the easiest to kill. Followed not too far by black bear. Therefore 'not too tough.' Of course shot placement counts, that goes without saying, so I didn't.

This is a bear hunting thread, not another damn 'defense' thread. Killing a stalked unsuspecting bear is a whole 'nuther ball-o-wax than 'stopping' a pissed-off, charging bear.

12 Ga. slug is a great game getter at close range but penetration is not its strong point due to low Sec. den., hardcast 45/70 bullet of around 500grs. will outpenetrate the slug!

The slugs i have are high velocity remington magnum "sluggers"

Anyways thank you for the help, I didn't think there was much of a possibility a bear could take a slug like that and be too happy. Shooting those sluggers on targets were just deadly, a lot of power comes out of em...for me at least ;)

My weapon of choice for deer/bear sized game is an 8 inch Frying Pan, teflon coated and with a solid base. I've tried 10 and 12 inch, but the velocities are too low and I get better accuracy from an 8 inch. Here is a picture of me last deer season sneaking up on a deer with my custom 8 inch Frying Pan:

Just don't use aluminum (it's too light) and make sure you give the bear a good whack.
