Beater or Safe Queen?

Still worth it. Personally I'd be shoping for another range though.
$250 for a holster course? Does it include a Champagne and caviar lunch or what?
 
I'd go for something in between instead of getting a norinco or a $1500 gun. Spend $600-1000 and get a gun you can use every day but will also care enough to keep clean and in a good condition. Another reason not to get s**t gun is so you can have it as a keeper and maybe pass on to your kid etc.

+100 - you're not a shooter if you don't shoot. Get one (a gun-virtually any gun) and get out on the range with a bucket of reloads and shoot. Skill and ability come from practice, and experience. There are some great practice drills at pistol-training dot com. Ability has nothing to do with shiny hardware, and ability cannot be taken away.

PS, my first day out with my then new M&P9 we had freezing rain at the range. I put a few through the gun (it's first 2 mags) then put it on the table to change targets, when I came back to shoot it again it had about 1/8 inch of ice on it, so naturally I picked it up, banged it on the table to de-ice it and continued to shoot. If you buy a shooting device, rather than 'shelf jewellery' you'll have way more fun. look into the Abbotsford Club, they seem to have a great group of guys who are into shooting, as opposed to 'looking cool'.

No matter how well you protect a lovely pistol you will eventually find a nick or scratch or some blemish, often from someone else's simple mishandling either at the range or when you show the gun to someone at home.

Just like a new car.

I still park a long way from the crowded areas of parking lots but I do have a couple of souvenirs on the door panels.

And yes, the first scratch is a pi**off, but the gun & car still work as well.
 
Buy a Glock! They don't scratch or show signs of holster wear easy. They shoot anything & are so frigen ugly you won't care when it does get marked up!
 
Guns are designed for 'dirty' work. Buy quality, it can handle the bumps and bruises and still work, a beater may fail you.
 
Nobody wants a piece-of-sh*t. Grab yourself a MINT handgun, take care of it, clean it, but run ammo threw it like a pig :) Guns are ment to be shot, but take care of it along the road and you'll be happy.
 
All guns should be shot, used and will therefore develop handling marks. This is to be expected. Safe queens are only really respectable if they have historic value beyond the value as a tool.

I own only beaters, from a $500 Ruger to a $1500 SIG. All are used and abused as I see fit.
 
If you gonna buy a gun why not use it? It can not be a safe Queen and still be in good shape, just take care of it whiel your using it.
 
Buy quality firearms, use them hard, give them proper attention, cleaning and maintenance, and they will last you a lifetime. But don't abuse any firearm or other tool. Use them as they were intended and learn to live with the wear and handling marks. I'm not sure I understand what a "beater" firearm is... Should you trust a "beater" anything to do its job reliably?

When I pass the Norinco 1911 to my grandson, I'll tell him that it has served me well, and I am just as proud of it as I was with my long gone Colts and Springfields. I hope he takes care of it as well as the Smith and Wessons, Rugers, CZs, Marlins and Russkie SKSs.
