Beater rifles that just plain work well.

Why not?

After digging this one out of the back of the safe for a picture, I got to thinking that most of us probably have one or two. :)

This old Remington 721 in 300 H&H isn't much to look at, but still able to start 180 gr Partitions at 3000+ fps

The scope is just as old as the rifle, a Lyman All American.

The recoil pad is not so old, a double flip flop that makes the rifle feel like shooting a 270. Reminds me of the Ugly 9.3X62, and works just as well.

Mossberg 151M-B .22lr

This is a picture I borrowed from the internet, I wish mine still looked half this good. Mines beat to #ell from bouncing around on the quad and in the tractor.

Round count unknown but it's in the thousands. I can't kill this thing. I did break one firing pin several years ago but that's the only problem I've had. I don't really take care of it either. Every once in a while it gets a shot of oil sprayed in the action and that's about it.

From age 8 thru 15, I killed several hundred grouse and hares on up to coyotes with a 151K... it had a nice REAL rifle feel to it for a .22.

My first rifle was a Cooey 'senior' .22. What I'd categorize as my 1st beater would be my 1st big game rifle, a Simpson-Sears 'special'. A 'sporterized' 303Br. Lee Enfield.

I also grew up with a Mossberg 151 K...a KA I think? Excellent rifle, absorbed teenage abuse like sponge and was still accurate enough to win turkey shoots. Was stolen from me up near Muncho Lake back in the 80's.

The one that immediately comes to mind is a ruger 77 in 7x57 that I bought new in 1977. It ended up a bit of a beater because of the fact that it was my one and only and I used it constantly. Shot two boxes of practise ammo a week ,minimum and it was on hundreds of hunts in all types of weather. All this took its toll on the stock and bluing. I lost track of the number of rounds I put through it but it was in the thousands. Still busting plastic jugs of water out at 300 yds when a friend talked me out of it and I bought a new Remington classic in 7x57. Sigh.... glory days

I think me worst two are an old Winchester 69A with a 4x Weaver Classic awn'err.
T'uther one is an old pump 12 recently purchased awff'ear.
Don't know if my old 92 44-40 would classify as a beeter.
Paw's old Schultz izz gitt'in pretty close.

This sporter Swede was a bit of a beater when I first got it:

Cleaned up pretty nice & was a respectable shooter:

Don't have it anymore but did keep an unmolested Husqvarna M38 I had at the same time:
