Anyone have one?

I'm putting one together and have all the parts ordered or on the way (thanks in part to some fabulous members of this forum). They are as follows.

LH SPS youth
unfired SS Remington takeoff in 7mm-08 (may rune the issued 20" tube till it dies)
McMillan compact gelcoat swirl finish
Callahan shroud/spring
Talley LW's
ADL bow
Leupold VX II 3-9X40

If you don't have one, how would go about acquiring one?

I have one.....a beater Parker Hale 1200C in 308...stock has three coats of varnish.....on most of it...stock had been chopped and brought back with a slip on pad......barrel is pitted.....70's vintage 4X Bushnell.......paid $250 for it about 8 years ago....if it fell off the quad I'd just keep going.....

Your truck gun sounds a little nice for knocking around behind the seat of a truck. Why not just get a decent SPS factory?

I'm left handed and options are VERY limited. The 7mm-08 chambering is non negotiable. I also want this gun to be able to go hunting wherever and whenever needed, never shift zero, and handle and balance correctly. I basically have a factory SPS. With a McMillan on it.:D

I'm a lefty too. So I bought a M14S. When we were kids most of our dads had an Enfield .303 of various vintages behind the pickup seats. Then you could also have a loaded magazine in the gun, just nothing chambered. I figure an M14S behind the seat or in a horse scabbard while riding (5 shot short mag) is perfect! If I keep the factory stock that is.

Hopefully it's an 80's import truck your after, or the 7-08 may be a bit light.:p

You may want to sell the factory 20" tube and recoup some costs, however, if that is your idea of a "beater" you may not need the money.

Mine is a Winchester built P14 303 British. Has a Boyds Pepper Laminate and a Timney trigger, sports a 6x36 Leupold in Leupold hardware. Great, tough old warrior that shoots the 180 Sierra into 1" if I do my part. Regards, Eagleye.

The perfect truck gun is different things to different people. To some it's the most rugged rifle they can dream up. To others it's a rifle which, if lost or stolen, or dropped out of the canoe,is no loss.
A friend's favourite was a Remington Mohawk the only modifications being those accomplished by age and abuse. To him, a proper truck gun had to be able to be thrown from a distance of ten feet into the back of the truck with no ill effects. In fairness, it has to be said the truck was usually full of junk which cushioned the landing.
You're going with the Remington action which is acceptable I guess (I'd favour the Ruger for ruggedness) and the McMillan stock is also a good choice. I don't like the Talley Lightweights because they are, well, lightweights. I don't like the 3-9 scope because it is too bulky and the objective bell begs to be bent. The rest of the outfit is fine though.
For scope and bases, I would use Weaver steel bases epoxied to the receiver. I would mount a 1.5-5 or similar scope in Leupold QRW rings. I want that scope and mounts to be the strongest part of the rifle.
By the way, that 7-08 is fine but I'd do a 308 myself. Regards, Bill.

Truck gun? Define truck gun. To me anything that isn't an inexpensive pump, double, or single barreled shotgun isn't a "truck gun". Rifles do need some care due to the sights or scopes they use which won't be worth crap if out of alignment.

My current "truck gun" is a little Ruger Frontier in 358 Win...wears a 1.5x5 Leupold. The 16 1/2" barrel makes it quick to get out of the cab without any hang-ups...has all the pointability of a brick, but two years ago it head-shot a nice mulie 200 yds. from the truck..... ;)

12 guage single shot I got for a case of beer, helped drink half the case too so I think it was a good deal

LMFAO! Sweet deal indeed. :D

My truck gun waivers between a 30/30, or a p14, or a SKS.
Depends on which one gives me the best pout look as I'm about to walk out the door. :D

In my opinion, and in my case, my truck gun gets used a lot. Therefore i want it to be good solid and reliable, capable of taking what ever is in season, of course it has to be pretty, life's to short to hunt with an ugly gun;). What's the point of having a safe full of pretty guns but useing the beater on a daily basis:confused:? My truck gun changes with the seasons but right now it's a sako forrester .243win with vari x II 3-9x40.

um , 32rf bulldog pistol with 50 rd's of ammo :)
and i try to keep my 7mm THOMPSON CENTER ENDEAVOR with me when i go out for long rides
and for when i am atving i keep the .32 on me and the 870 tactical with my on my front rack

My idea of a truck gun would be an Norc SKS, Mosin Carbine, Spoter Enfield or an inexpensive 12 gauge pump. A well used, fair condition lever action would fit the bill also. A scoped rifle doesnt seem like a practical truck gun to me.
