Poor ol' One Lung had to go out and buy one of those new fangled Ruger Redhawks in .45ACP/.45 LC and shoot one for himself. I'm still mad about it!

Oh boy. I love this thing. The powerband on it is going to be wider than the grand canyon - I can putter around with the patty-cake .45ACP loads I'm using in my automatics...or - according to the cool kids - bark up the .45 Long Colts up to levels surpassing the .44 Magnum. I dunno if I'll do that - if I want a cannon there are better guns for that...but jeez Louise - this thing just feels good in the hand! The fit and finish and workmanship are all right there but as usual - it's a Ruger, and by some unwritten law known only to Bill and God Himself - that means a trigger that pulls like an office trailer down eight long miles of an oil lease road! Yannow...the triggers on Rugers belonged in the chit house back in the 80's when I got my first one...but they're even WORSE now! Have any of you boys done the thing with the Wolff triggers on these Redhawks? I'm game for a spring change but other than that the trigger isn't bad - it breaks fairly clean with little over-travel. It's just fuggin heavy!

As an added treat at the range today the sun was sitting just right so that I could actually see my slow poke reloads fly! It's almost like shooting tracers! There is greatness in this gun, I can feel it! A word to the wise, fellas - if you have no experience with the .45 Long Colt - jump on that and fix it! My first handshake with this calibre has left me feeling that there may be as much merit here as with the .41 Magnum. Any tips and pointers you fellas might have for a DA revolver noob would be sincerely appreciated!

As far as the trigger I have a RedHawk in 41 Mag that has the nicest double action trigger I've ever shot. I own 4 Redhawks and a GP 100 along with a Security Six, as well as 5 S&W revolers and I'll take the Ruger trigger over S&W any day

I bought my Redhawk (.44Magnum) used with the Wolf treatment already done so I can't compare it with the original factory trigger but for what that's worth, I like what I have.

Nice piece

Any idea if S&W clips work with it?

Suppose I could go look that up myself. Just making conversation.

I think my favorite round is .45 Colt or so called Long Colt. Personally I would not try to load the .45 Colt up to or above .44 Mag loads though. If you really wanted to do this and the gun could handle it than I would buy some .454 Cansull brass and cut it down to .45 Colt length. That brass is made for the big loads. I'm no expert though.

I have said before and repeat here. There is a big difference between the length of .45ACP and .45Colt rounds. I measure .43 inches in length. What this means to me is the projectile of the .45 ACP is more or less in free air for this distance before it hits the smaller diameter of the cylinder/bbl. I think this matters. What do you other internet geniuses think? I guess I have to say that Ruger is a smart company so they must have thought of this so maybe I'm just full of it!

I am not a revolver guy Rusty. My pistols start and end with the .45ACP (I don't do 9mm) - so all my experience is extremely limited. Furthermore - I am pretty much a slow fire kinda guy. One of the revolver gurus corrected me when I was bad mouthing the Ruger trigger; and from a single action perspective...I stand by my guns, if you'll pardon the pun! The Ruger triggers are heavy to my hand - and most respectable smiths can slick them up nicely. I am not convinced that the length of that cylinder-to-barrel jump is all that critical - this is not a target gun you would go hunting gold medals with. I have also heard that the cartridge chamber mouths must all be super consistent for best accuracy too. I agree that all that stuff may affect accuracy somewhat...but if you can bolt that thing into a Ransom Rest and it will print 2~3" groups - who can ask for more? I seem to recall that beardo on Gunblast.com showing a few sub-3" groups...and that is good enough for me.

I agree with the pro's on loading though - standard .45 LC loads are damned sweet to shoot in this sensible revolver. The only reason I might bark it up would be if I were still hunting, and our good friends in the Liberal Party of Canada and the RCMP and Fish & Wildlife gave us licensed carry permits. If I were shooting at soft targets I like to hit them with every last erg of energy I can squeeze out of my gun. Other than that, who needs the hassles and fatigue of the recoil?

100 years ago I saw a show about General Patton and he had the most awesome holster for is guns and I would like to make one for the little Redhawk just like it! If any of you fellas knock down an elephant while out on safari - couldjya spare old One Lung a tusk to carve some ivory grips out of...? :)

I shoot at SPFG outside Aaaaaadmontin....if ya see me on the range stop in and say hello - and try a few rounds for yourself!

45 Colt, 300 or 325 gr bullets, pushed to 44 Mag speeds. Go right through a running javelina from south end to northbound. As to the triggers, yeah mostly Ruger DA triggers suck. A Wolfe spring kit will help, and polishing all the contact surfaces will help even more. I've had a couple of RedHawks over the years, but that's a pretty one in a nice cartridge combo. - dan
