Bedding a 17 HMR?

I'm going to glass bed another rifle. While I'm at it and I have all the goop mixed up, I was considering bedding my Savage 93R17BTVS.

Considering the low recoil of this round, and the stability of the Savage platform, is this a wasted effort or do people bed their rimfire rifles regularly?

Has anyone done a savage rimfire, and to what success?

All of my benchrest guns and 10/22 are bedded. Yes it makes a difference. All it really does is makes everything more consistant. Usually the fit between the barreled action and stock really isn't that great on factory guns and glass bedding makes it a tighter fit; meaning the stock doesn't move around as much inbetween shots.

If you are up to it, I would say go for it. If its allready shooting really good then maybe leave it.

There's the rub. Thinking that your rifle shoots well, as opposed to doing everything you can (reading on the internet) to start from an assumed position of "best there is". My .17 shoots into a toonie at 100 yards. Consistent in good conditions. Do I want more? Sure. Old Homer Simpson mocking an old German saying: If it's worth doing, it's worth over doing.

Yes that is a hard one. Toonie size groups ar preatty dang good at 100 yards. If you are a target shooter and want that "extra edge" I would say sure; go for it. If you just occasionally shoot it and are mainly foccused on hunting, etc maybe you should leave it.

I don't think that glass bedding in anyway can decreace accuracy if done right.

Lionhill, maybe this will help shrink your group size. I too bought the same thumbhole savage with great expectations. I shot every different kind of ammo I could find, Remington,Federal, Winchester, and Hornady. The hornady was by far the best with the other three averaging twoonie sized groups and the hornady averaging quarter sixed groups.

I just recently found a place that had the .17 hmr hornady's in 20 grain and the thing shoots dime sized groups one after another. These are 5 shot groups @ 100 yards.
With this ammo it also shoots 1 1/2" groups at 200 yards once you take into account the 12 inch drop. It is no problem adjusting with a leupie with target turrets.

The other most important thing I have found after cleaning is that it doesn't really start to tighten up until you have about 50 rounds down the pipe.

Yes I have found the same thing after a good cleaning. I wonder why?

I found the 20 grain at a local hardware store in Brandon where I am a regular customer. They gave me case price on a brick for $116.96 which I thought was pretty reasonable. Think I will go back for another one.
I talked to a few of the benchrest boys out at our range with there $4000 PPC BR guns and they suggest that once there is some fouling down the bore, that they will shoot better. I am not really sure, I have already told you more than I know. LOL

How many in a brick of 17 HMR? That sounds like a great price.

A brick is 500 rounds. A case is 5,000 !

23.4 cents per round, good deal.

Better then 26 cents per round ($13/box of 50).

Still all in all, not a bad round for the money.

I seen a case of 5,000 for $1056.85, 21.1 cents per round!

After trying my hand at the monthly postal matches posted by CZ452 I have also considered looking at a bedding option for my Savage Synthetic. It's very possible the fault lies in my technique....

I talked to a local smith that told me I should really be cleaning the barrel every 10 shots to get optimum performance due to the muzzle velocity? This goes against everything I have read so far on CGN and RFC.

Also, I have had a little bit of experience with the 20grn Hornady's and found that their avg drop at 200yds was more like 4 inches. I have not experienced a 12 inch drop with either the 17 grn or the 20 grn. I can't comment on the actual distance at the range, but I had specifically set up a large piece of cardboard at the 200 mark with a measured 12 inch line from the bull...

As a point of comparison - using CZ's 100 unlimited targets, with a 20grn Hornady I can aim at the lower bulls on the sheet and hit the top targets.

Thoughts?

Ryan I really don't see any use in cleaning every 10 shots; especially when it take 2 or 3 just to settle in. I clean my guns really often; more than most people but I still do not clean my .17 for at least 50 rounds; sometimes 100 or more.

Maybe if you don't clean for several hundred rounds it may start to loose a bit of velocity just becuase it is so dirtry.

There is a really good sticky by Jordan at the top of the rimfire blog that deals with bullet drop. It seems that it depends a great deal on what distance you zero the rifle at on what your final bullet drop at 200 is.
