I just picked up a Stevens 325 ( bolt action) rifle in 30-30 and I was wondering if anyone has a good way I could bed it. Seeing that it has only one action screw and barrel band ,I'm not sure if a good bedding is possible or worth it:confused: I've done the bedding on other rifles, my 700 PSS, my Savage 10FP-LE2B and a Sako 6 PPC, all were done with Devcon steel...Any suggestions???
BTW the Stevens really likes 178gr A-Max bullets over H-414:D
Thanks

The bedding in these rifles is quite different. I would suggest bedding the receiver ring, recoil lug, barrel breech area, and barrel on either side of the band. This would stablize the original contact points. These rifles usually shoot very accurately, and of course you are not limited to blunt bullets.

before you go and bed the rifle play with the barrel band. Adjust the tension and shoot it. Find the sweet spot and you shoud have no problems. Unless your stock is at the end of its service life and you are trying to extend it. Do the lug - action.

I 'm going to try to play with the barrel band tension as mentioned , actually the previous owner ,mentioned it also. He suggests to just tighten it a little, not to tight. I have shot it only once with different reloads, so far ( with the band tight) I got a great group with H-414 and 178 gr A-Max,:D you can see a pic of the target in the reloading section. I definatly want to bed the recoil lug , because the wood around it ,is in poor shape.
Will shoot it again this weekend

You can also weld on a metal block to the rear of the trigger group side plates and drill/tap it for a rear screw. There is more than enough support there to take the rear screw modification and it does not interfere with the trigger.
Then you just bed it as you would a regular rifle, leaving out the barrel band.

These rifles are suprisingly accurate and worth tuning.
