Bedding a tube mag? (Button Mag)

Looking for some input on this.

Working on a project Marlin that will have a button tube mag. I will most likely fasten the mag to the barrel, but has anyone heard of, or see why one couldn't just bed the tube into the stock?

I've not done it myself, but have read about bedding Marlin mag tubes in RTV silicone: http://www.levergun.com/articles/Race_Tuning.htm

The above is more for tuning/accuracy. It sounds like your thinking of bedding the tube to hold it in place without any additional mounting?
 
I'd like to button mag it flush with the nose cap. That means either secure it to the existing tenon or cut another dovetail in the barrel. Having it bedded in the stock, and not attached to the barrel would be ideal.
 
So is this just a theoretical exercise, or do you expect to achieve an exploitable advantage? Some traditional lever action rifles shoot surprisingly well, and IMHO, nothing exploitable would be gained from supporting the magazine tube independently of the barrel. Then there are the unintended consequences; perhaps with no magazine tube to dampen barrel vibration, your accuracy might even degrade.
 
Is the fore-stock a cap version or a carbine? If a carbine, there is no point in your suggestion as the carbine band will still rigidly connect the parts - it can;t be eliminated or the fore-stock will fall out the front of the action when you shoot it.

If it's the cap-style fore-stock, if could be doable. Probably I would countersink a set screw into the bottom of the cap that threads into the tube and tube cap to hold it all together and forget about bedding.

There is no way to isolate the stock from the barrel though, since you need a way for the stock to stay put.
 
I should clarify, this has nothing to do with accurizing the rifle or even "free floating" the barrel. Part of the project is to button what is currently is a full length mag, It is a nose cap stock.



I was just looking for input of methods out there to support the mag tube.

Claven, I was thinking the same thing. A sling stud or recessed screw through the cap then threaded into the cap tenon.
