I have a M-88 that I've had a hard time getting to group well. I took it apart and there's no bedding around the front screw area and the barrel's just been sitting/rubbing right on the wood at the rear. Does anyone have advice on bedding these rifles, will it help? Thanks.

I did a 100 many years ago & it brought it from a 3" to consistant 1 1/2" hunter.
Don't remember where I found instructions but it is bedded around top rear of reciever & completely bedded in the forearm screw socket except for a relief in the front of the screw block. I believe the barrel is free floated in the stock.

There are two bedding issues here one is the hook at the end of the action. IT has to be tight and fit properly. I did this by removing the hook reciever from the action and reinstalling it with a sheet of cigarette paper under it. I then bedded the back two inches of the action. Removed the action and proceded to bed the rest of the action and barrel right up to the retainer screw. I then remover the cigarette paper and the hook, barrel and action are tight in the stock. You also have to ensure that the action is squared to the hook receiver as well.
Remember if you take the aciton on this gun apart you should make some disassembly and assemply pins to hold parts to gether while you slide them out of the receiver. Please note the rounded edges on some parts that mirror each other from side to side, and the orientation these parts are to the action. A digital camera and several photographs along with the assemply pins will help you reassemble the action.
The assembly pins should be the same diameter as the pins that hold the subgroup in the action, and they should be just slightly shorter than the width of the inner recess in the action. Do not foreget to put a champhered edge on these so they do not get hung up on sharp edges. Also they have to be a slip fit into the retaining holes.
I have assembled several of these guns brought to me in a basket and I have sold the owners assembly pins...

For mine, I first tried shooting it with the forearm removed. The improvement was dramatic, so all I did was remove a bit of wood here and there, until the forearm was slightly loose where it meets the action, IE: there is a bit of clearance, but still attached solidly to the barrel. Worked very well.
