Bedding an m14.

There is a DVD on the subject. You can see many pictures of bedding jobs on the M14 public forum. I bedded my USGI stock using JB weld, kiwi shoe polish as a release agent, and a piece of aluminum as bedding collar under the barrel to centre it and put tension on the stock so that when it hardened, the barrel to stock tension was there. I probably did an amateurish job, but the gun shoots very well despite it.

There's not really much to see. It ends up looking not much different than it did, other than that it now fits precisely. According to the guys on the M14 forums, the top of the stock should contact at the horseshoe of the heel of the receiver and along the rails. There can and should be a gap forward of the rear horseshoe. Not sure why, but I just followed what I'd read. Go on the M14 forums and a guy posted a whole string of pictures of wood stocks that have been bedded. The bedding shows very pronounced when you do that on wood.

I'd like to see what a real bedding collar looks like. Some guys bend a piece of coat hanger into a V and somehow put that between the barrel and stock to create the tension while the bedding hardens. I used some flat aluminum, similar to an aluminum hardstick.

id show pics of mine bedded but the whole rifle is painted black so you wont see much... plus my camera isnt that great lol

Looks like you did an awesome job Grizzlypeg! I've been wanting to find a good photo of what a finished product looked like, as well as some M14 specific bedding info before I tackled bedding my M14. Keep up the good work!

Not my work or picture. It is one of the best pictures I've seen illustrating where the bedding goes because of the contrast in color between the bedding and the wood. On my fiberglass stock I shot a light coat of paint on top of the stock to make it all blend in and a picture would show little of that area. I think its worth doing. Otherwise, the positioning of your receiver and barrel in the stock is left to chance.

if you truly want to bed your m14 type rifle to national match specs.... find yourself a copy of the jerry kuhnhaussenn m14 .30 cal service rifle shop manual. The details on the different bedding practices are more in depth than anything i've seen elsewhere.

Further on the subject of bedding, its my intention to use bedding on the top surface of the stock of my steel insert bedded Norinco into Boyd's stock gun. I will elevate the barrel while the epoxy hardens in order that the receiver be canted upward slightly, and the barrel ring to stock ferule tension be there. I've used paper shims to determine that a small amount of lift at the front of the receiver will give me good tension on the barrel. I hoping I can keep it looking neat and clean and have bedding only beneath the receiver.
