Not sure if this is the right place for this but I'm sure someone here will be able to help me out.

I'm looking at bedding a rifle, this being my first time I would like and advice from people who have already done this.

I'm planning on using devcon for the bedding material, has anyone else used this? How does it work?

What would be a good release agent to use on the action? How much of the action should be bedded?

Any advice would help!

Devcon it's just about as good as it gets for bedding compound. For a release agent, use any shoe polish. Some say it has to be neutral, black or brown works just fine. Once you've coated the action, go back and do it again to make sure that it will come apart.

There's debate where the action/barrel should be bedded. Some do up to the recoil lug, some bed the lug, and others bed the 1st inch or two of the barrel. Personally, I bed up to and including the recoil lug. Seems to work as my rifle are quite accurate.

Thanks, I've did some research on this and I was thinking I'd bed the recoIL lug but none of the barrelationship so that's what I'll do. How do you secure the action into the stock for the devcon to harden?

Devcon works excellent for bedding. As TJW mentioned, I bed up to and including the recoil lug. I went to the hardware store and found two bolts with the right thread pattern to screw into the action and fit through the holes in the stock. Then I cut the heads off the bolts. I made sure they were long enough to stick all the way through the stock so that the action is positioned correctly. Once I had all the devcon in there, I used some heavy rubber exercise bands and wrapped it as tight as I possible could to hold the action while the devcon set up. Worked pretty well.

Also NOT all shoe polish works good. Just the KIWI stuff is all I know that works good.

I just started using hornady one shot in the spray can that seems to work pretty good. I like it because you get good coverage with the spray.

Use min wax paste wax for a release agent that way you won't have to second guess your self and black electrical tape works good to hold action down and in place while the bedding compound sets up

Wrap some tape on your dummy action bolts so they fit nice and snugly in the holes. Don't forget to put release agent on the bolts and inside the holes (q-tips). If the bolts are loose in the holes, you can end up twisting the action in the stock when wrapping the elastic or electrical tape around the stock/action while the devcon is curing.

Take your time, plan out the steps, and TRY to relax during the cure. On my first (and maybe 2nd) bedding job, it was probably the most stressful 16-24 hours of my life waiting for the epoxy to cure & find out if I just permanently glued the action to the stock...
