My father and I are in the process of bedding a 12FVSS for the first time, so if you see anything wrong (I'm especially puzzled by the magazine body still attached to the action) PLEASE let me know.

As far as we can tell all of the prep is done, here are some pictures to illustrate.

Forward point of contact: We sanded it down and then ripped it up/drilled some holes with the dremel for additional grip. We're planning on filling the deep recesses on the left and right sides of the pillar, is this a good idea?

Recoil Lug Contact: We cut up the side of the front point of contact that will be coming into contact with the rear face of the recoil lug. Enough cutting?

Rear point of contact: Once again it was sanded and ravaged by the dremel. We filled the trigger area partially with play dough, hopefully this will force all the excess devcon forwards into the mag well or up onto the sides of the stock.

Bottom view of action: We taped up the holes and slots around the trigger contact on action. I used some play dough to fill in the slot that the bolt release (correct name?) slips through.

Right side of action: Should we cover the entire magazine body? Is it easy to remove?

Any tips you experienced guys can give would be great!

Take the saftey out as well as you dont want to chance bedding material going near it . Also with the magazine wrap a layer or two of masking tape around it (sticking to the magazine) and then wrap the magazine with one layer of masking tape STicky side out and then one more layer of masking tape sticky in (agaist the sticky side ) as it will create a "sleave " around the magazine and the action will pop out easy if bedding material gets down there (it most likely will)
thats what I do

I have never

bedded a Savage outside of the new 17HMR. But I would handle it just as if it were a Rem 700.

I would suggest bedding without the mag metal in place. Just coat the action really well with release agent. After the compound is put on and the barreled action put into the stock, and secured in place, I go with wet Q-Tips dipped in rubbing alcohol to remove the worst of the bedding in the areas it is not wanted.

This even goes for along the edge of the action and the stock. I do not use any tape along the stock just the Q-Tips and rubbing alcohol. Cleanup afterwards is a breeze.

Just the way I do it.

looks somewhat like the FVSS I just did, which was my first bedding job as well. I took that last piece of the safety out of mine it just slides out, and I filled the slots in the barrel nut with playdough, and then covered it with a thin packing tape. I filled the little hollow in the front and back of the recoil lug with playdough as well.
I taped both sides of the stock full length of where I was bedding, and coated the top bit with release agent.

the large recesses on each side of the front pillar and in front of the recoil lug I filled the bottom 1/2" or so with playdough just so I didnt need as much epoxy, not sure if that is good but thats what I did.

you have alot more playdough on the sides of the mag than I used, but as long as it leaves enough room for a bit of bedding on each side of the action.
oh and I made sure I had the tang fully floated before I did the job, I used 2 bands of electrical tape around the barrel to locate it where I wanted it and center it in the barrel channel.

as well I used long headless screws to center the action screw holes, and held the whole thing together with electrical tape around the stock and action

sorry I am not one of the experienced guys you mentioned, but our situations are alike.

its nice to get done and then you wonder why you worried about it

have fun

any Idea how to get the magazine off? all the ones I have done I havent been able to get the mag off the action as It dose not just slide off and it has "punch marks" on the hole where it was put in to prevent it from moving ............

I think that I would have to bend some of the little metal tabs on the mag to get it to fall into pieces and come out. I doubt they'd snap off so easily but I don't think I'm going to risk it.

I'll most certainly put some more play dough around where the recoil lugs latches on so no devcon gets into the cracks.

Thanks guys! Keep it coming.

Tape the front of the recoil lug with one layer of tape. The sides of the recoil with 2 layers and the bottom if the recoil lug with 3 layers. Tape the barrel nut so it does not become locked into the stock by the bedding.

That is just what I was going to say.

I will add only use the rear screw very lightly to line the action in the stock while the epoxy cures... don't induce any stress by tightening it or by using two screws...

It does not have to be bedded every where for good accuracy... that is more for looks... a little bedding at the front ring and a little bedding at the rear screw is all it needs.

The screws are 1/4" fine thread. Its easier to make up two studs by cutting the heads off two long screws and use them for dropping the action in place. Black electrical tape or surgical rubber tubing to hold the action down, rather than tightened screws.

Wrap several layers of making tape or black electrical tape around the barrel to centre the barrel in the barrel chanel in the stock with clearance.

Sorry man

that is what I know about Savages. I thought the metal piece would just pop off like the Rems.

Maybe that is why the Savages are supposedly more accurate out of the box. Slightly stiffer due to the mag well metal secured to the action. :p:p

Here's a thread that has bedding process for savage/stevens. Gitrdun did a good job of explain how he did it. I followed the same instructions and it turn out pretty good.

You may want to put some playdough in the channels on the front recoil lug just to prevent the potential of lock-up. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help guys, my father and I set up the devcon and set the rifle in place tonight. We're going to break it apart on wednesday, wish us luck!
