Bedding the rear base.

I'm putting together a 243 for longish range Coyotes based around a Remington 700. When I went to mount the scope bases/rings I noticed that the rear bridge is low. Not uncommon. But also not good when trying to utilize a 1" tubed scope for elevation correction out past 700 yds. So I decided to bed the rear base to get everything in correct alignment.

how old is that 700?

reportedly there was a change in the height of the rear bridge in about 1974, and the left hand 700 was intro'd in '73.

Any nonprefix serial number and some A prefix receivers will have a lower rear bridge by about .017"

It's vintage 2010/2011 including the whiz bang crappy adjustable X-Mark.

I would love to get ahold of a SA LH BDL. They were never catalogued as far as I know but I have owned them.

I'll clean up the edges and bedding compound and voila. Custom bases.

I've done this before on a few rifles over the years. So far, it's always improved the fit of the base and the alignment of the rings. - dan

I have also done that with both bases to correct elevation or increase it. I will leave the base screws loose.. just tight enough to hold the bases in alignment with the holes and have the rings tight on the scope tube holding the bases in perfect alignment with each other... release agent on the rifle and the epoxy becomes part of the base.
