This is my new LongBranch, 1944, 69L match serial number, #0 bolt head, type 1 rear sight. Maybe it will be a good candidate to be redone with all the wooden parts. The only marking I saw on the wood is a small KB. Is it birch or beech? Thanks in advance.

I would guess at Birch ... grain doesn't look right to me for Beach.

The Oak said to the young sappling, "I don't know if you are a son of a Birch, or a son of a Beach, but your mom was the best peice of Ash in the forest."

after looking at some pics of enfields with beech stock , it apears that beechwood has very pronounced and heavy wood rays .
wood rays run at 90 degree's to the grain and are found in all species of tree's .

the wood rays in the op's stock are not very obvious , which again makes me think it is birch .

When you look at it at differnet angles does the grain look like there is fish scales on it? If so its beech. The area around the 'KB' looks like the start of that. (I hope this link works) http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=107106&hilit=fish This shows beech furniture on enfields.

It's true that the area at left of 'KB' is doing like fish scales and still going on up to the trigger guard area. The same effect is absent elsewhere on the forend or on the butt stock... I expected an answer like: "if it's a LongBranch it should be birch (or beech.)" The two woods are so similar... guess that you can't be shure of what you'll get when ordering an handguard.

Can't see the pics but beech will have frecils birch will have a wavy grain to it and the more BLO you apply the darker the orange it will turn depending what kind of birch it is.

Looks like beech to me, you usually see the, I think it is called, "flaming" around the top or bottom of the wood and you can just see it around the grip of your butt stock.

Those who said birch were right. Beech is similar but have some frecils. I tried to find a Long Branch full length forend and handguards in birch but didn't succeded. I got those parts in beech and I guess they are British-made. After preparation, all the wooden parts were finished with boiled linseed oil.

There is the result:
