.....a used blr .308 for a while. Wondering how the winchester 88's are for comparison. Have had a savage 99 for a while, love it, but it pinches my finger. Want to stay with the pistol grip. Any thoughts on blr straight vs. pistol grip. thanks for your time.

I tried a BLR with straight grip and escaped with all fingers unpinched. Prophet River Arms had a couple of BLRs in .308 for while.

Savage 99 pinches your finger? How exactly? I'm a big Savage 99 fan, so I'm interested when I hear guys say they have trouble with them. Is it a .308? I've read the .308s don't tend to function quite as well.

It is indeed a .308. No problems with function. My trigger finger gets pinched when I cycle the action, unless I conciously move my finger out of the trigger guard when cycling. I would prefer something I did'nt have to think about. That's why I am looking at blrs, and since I have no experience with the win 88's, I'm wondering how they are.

As far as lever 308s go, the BLR81 is the best of the bunch. They have a nice smooth action, great mag system, are quite accurate, won't crack at the tang and won't pinch yer fingies.

The only thing to watch on the BLRs is that you need the lowest scope mounts out there with a straight tube scope in order to get the line of sight low to help sighting as the combs on these guns are very low.

Most of the SuperFuddCubs comments I can agree with.
I have a 2.5x10-50 on my 358win and have no looky'n down the barrel problems.
Frankie ain't got no cheecks, maybe?
The straight rear wood I believe is more comfortable compared to the
pistol grip variety. Easier to find too.
There is a CGN's I bought a BLR81 from and he attends the gun shows locally.
I haven't figured out his handle here, but he is here.
I know he had a few very nice BLR81's and a few Winchester 88's as well for sale.
Maybe he'll see this thread and chime in.
Pleasant lad to deal with and his rifles are top notch.
If you are at all interested, I may be able to find a receipt with his name on it.
P.M. me if you shall.

I notice the member by the name of jimbow seems to have a few for sale now and then. There was a nice one on the ee today, if .358 ammo was easier to find, I would have bought it. I'll hold out for the one I want... .308, pistol grip. Blued or stainless, laminate or walnut... don't matter to me. Hey Kamlooky, you like the straight grip better eh. How come?

As far as I'm concerned the Winchester 88 is superior to the BLR. The BLR is muzzle light and has a TERRIBLE trigger. A pre 64 88 is a better value in my opinion plus it will appreciate in value over time. No finger pinching with the 88 either.

I've never heard of the finger pinch. Do you have large hands? I always found the 99 lever and triggerguard quite generous in size, but I'm used to the straight grip. The pistol grip may be slightly tighter. I guess I don't like hearing about guys giving up their 99s. It's a brilliant rifle. Have you considered a straight grip 99, but in .300 Savage? That round can do anything the .308 can do.

How come?

I was of the same mindset as you with the pistol grip stock.
Tradition and looks maybe?
I grabbed and shouldered this straight wood rear and it fit so much better.
My next BPS pump will be of the same configuration rear wood as well.
You can pretty much grab it where it is the most comfortable, rather than
have the bent wood place your grip.
Plus this one was letting me lick me chops.
