If you can source some of the old "Motty's Bore Paste" for these dirty jobs, get some.
Motty's was designed back in the day when 303 and other ball was loaded over black powder.
Motty's is a lot more aggressive than JBs.
Back in the day, as we all know, field cleaning wasn't always possible. Also there were a lot of firearms that for one reason or another were dropped and left for varying periods of time. The ammo was all corrosive. Under some of the conditions the firearms sat in for extended periods of time, the bores got pretty rough to say the least.
They came up with all sorts of different methods to clean the firearms. They used everything from water to ammonia and some snake oils to get rid of the corrosion etc. They even went to using metal screens to run through the bore to muck out the rusticles.
Motty's Bore Paste is designed for such bores. It is intended ot be used after the screen and wipe session is over. It does a good job.
It's dark brown and comes in a small jar, which holds a couple of tablespoons of the stuff.
Smellie could likely tell us if it's still available. I have about a third of a jar left, which came from a friend, now deceased. It was one of the issue cleaners used in the armories to bring back barrels to a useful standard. Those people see everything possible when it comes to grungy bores. To bad a few of them don't chime in here.
If you do find some of the Motty's Bore Paste, please let me know.
