Beeper/Electric hunting dog collar recommendations?

If you're truly looking for a good collar I would talk with a place that sells them and has dog products. Here is a good shop in the US. I talked with the owner about numerous models, the guy knows what he's talking about.

Dogtra not a popular seller for some reason.
 
I spoke with a guy at Canadiangundogsupply & he said that Dogtra is his most popular collar, especially the 2500TB with guys running pointers. The breeder of my dog also uses the Dogtra product.

I used to run a Tri-Tronics collar years ago... The guy @ canadiangundogsupply said Dogtra has become the product innovator... Referring to the fact that I have not used collars in the last 10 years or so...

In speaking with the breeder, he said that Nos is gonna go one of two ways with the aversion training... (1) It won't matter what you do, Nos will always kill porcupines at every opportunity... Ugh... (2) Nos will learn to leave them be...

I am hoping it's #2 'cause Nos is gonna end up at the vets over & over and possibly dead when he gets quilled bad enough...

I would think twice about Dogtra.....

My experience with their product, and their customer service left a lot to be desired. Try asking at The Collar Clinic; they repair these units, not just sell them.

You can't go wrong with Tri-Tronics IMO. Worth the extra money.
 
Well good luck to you, Im lucky as my German Shorthair will find porcupines but just point them and bugger off.
If you pick a Dogtra and don't like it and buy something else its gonna be cheaper then another vet visit. Hopefully the e-collar will aide in deterring him from porcupines

After hitting the first porcupine, dogs either learn to fear them, or seek revenge and try to kill everyone they find. Dogs need to be broke and learn to hold a point weather it's on a bird, snake or porcupine. Shock collars can be used to break a dog, but it's not the best way for a soft temperament dog.

Tritronics make the best collars. Long battery life, expandable with extra collars, waterproof, durable and easy to use with multiple dogs. They do tend to be the more expensive option, but I've had models that still work after 10 years.

It zaps ok, but the "beeper" is really quiet. Too quiet to work properly in anything but stillness.

Perhaps mine came defective from the factory

i have the same thing. i dont think the beeper is for you to hear the animal, it's an audible warning for the dog that it better listen or it's going to be corrected. when my lab used to wear the collar i used the beeper 95% of the time instead of actually zapping her. similar to clicker training.
