A cleaning rod with some patches is best to clean a barrel.

Second best would be a pull-thru, but that can be hard on the crown.

if a gun is shooting decent ammo, you can get away with just spraying in some G96 from the muzzle, and storing the gun muzzle down on a pad of paper towel. A lot of crap will get lifted and creep out over a couple of days. If gun was quite dirty, repeat the spray and drain for a few more days.
