I am about to take the plunge into reloading (.223) and am starting with the Lee Anniversary Kit. However, the confusion starts when I look at the dies that I will need. Wholesale Sports lists Lee Pacesetter Rifle Dies (3 dies), Factory Crimp Rifles Dies, Taper Crimp Dies, Collet Neck Size Rifle Dies, and RGB Rifle Dies. What exactly does a new reloader need from this wide assortment? I notice that the RGB dies do not include the Factory Crimp Die, but the Pacesetter Rifle Die does, yet both are offered in .223. Is crimping an option (I had assumed that if a calibre needed to be crimped, you didn't have an option but to crimp it?). For the record, the reloading will be done for a Mini-14. Thanks for clearing up some of the confusion.

My advice to you would be to get the Deluxe die set if it's available in your calibre. It comes with a full-length sizing die, a neck-sizing die, seating die and crimp die. It's the most cost-effective die set as opposed to buying a Pacesetter set and then a neck-sizing die. You probably won't be using the neck-sizing die with your Mini-14, but if you ever get a bolt-action in .223, it'll come in handy. If you are pretty darned sure that you'll never need a neck-sizing die, then the Pacesetter die set should be fine for you. It comes with a full-length sizing die, seating die and factory crimp die as well as a shell holder.

I am working towards updating all my die sets my rifle reloading. I also use Lyman M dies for neck sizing after I full length size and I use a decaping die to remove primers. If you spent the $$ up front you will not be sorry.
