Beginner Pump Shotgun

Or some of your favourites?

Would be used for shooting clays and possibly duck hunting.

I prefer to get a pump over other forms of shotguns at this time.

Clay shooting is outside my realm of experience but I’d imagine you’d want a long threaded barrel for chokes. I’m sure someone with better advice will point you in the right direction.

I believe the Remington 870 is a great choice first shotgun.

It's a tried and true rock solid design over 75 years in production and thousands of easily available parts and accessories.

Small parts crucial to its operation are easy to find in Canada and various barrels, stocks etc are always available on the used market and if a full blown custom is what you grow into there are a number of great shops that can do wonders on an 870.

This gun will grow as you grow and be with you a lifetime

All shottys mentioned above are great options.
A less expensive but (in my experience anyway) a very reliable and comfortable to shoot shotgun is the winchester sxp.
I've mentioned them on a couple other threads.
I have two, 20 & 12ga, and have been impressed for the price. Run all day without issue. Easy to aim.
Not as pretty as my rem wingmaster or ithaca but the grouse/clays dont seem to care.
Good luck choosing!

You can often find a used mossberg 500 (or lakefield 400 - same gun) on the EE/GP for around $300-$400.
Around the same price as a Mossberg Maverick 88, but a better gun. Though to be fair, a Maverick 88 is great for the price. Both guns share interchangeable parts and both are made in the US by Mossberg.

I would recommend a 28” barrel with interchangeable chokes.

I would choose an 870 wingmaster with screw in chokes or a BPS with screw in chokes.28” barrel would work for everything. Go shoulder both and see what fits the best or better yet shoot both and then decide!

Hello,

I was wondering what you would consider the best beginner pump shotgun in 12 ga ?
Yes! Whatever you can afford, and whatever fits.

If you go to the old Remington catalogues you'll see a blur of Model 870s in finish, barrel length, magazine length, stock proportions, stock materials, gauge, choke, and chamber length. If Remington could have focussed on making a "best", they would not have made 3-dozen variations of the 870. Amplify that across all the makers, and you can see there is no wrong answer.
