HELLO! RECENTLY AQUIRED MY GREAT GRANDFATHERS SHOTGUN. ITS MARKED "J MANTON" AND "BELGIUM" SO I KNOW ITS NOT AN ORIGINAL. iTS BARREL IS MARKED "CAST STEEL" AND HAS THE SERIAL NUMBER 17.

BELGIAN PROOF MARKS AND IS ONLY VALUABLE TO ME FOR THE FAMILY CONNECTION.

ANY IDEAS WHEN IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN MADE?

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

After 1921 Belgian shotguns had a date code on the bottom of the barrel
List all marks or a pix of the bottom of the barrel and we’ll have a go at dating it

Does it say non pour balle? If the gun has chokes then this would be on underside of the barrels just toward the muzzles from this pic above. Used on choked guns 1878 to 1897 when it was replaced by "Choke" 1898 to 1924

nO, lONDONSHOOTER. nOTHING LIKE THAT

hmm. If the gun is not choked then it wouldn't say anything. By chokes I mean fixed chokes that are restrictions to the bore and part of the tubes. The idea of those barrel stamps was to keep people from loading a cartridge that had a ball that would fit in the chamber but was too large for the muzzles. Most unusual that a gun from the age of choke boring wouldn't have chokes. But anything is possible. Is it possible that your gun is pre-1878? I can't say but think not with steel barrels.

I was thinking the same about age. Thw barrels are just tubes, both appear to be the same diameter. I should have taken a picture but its apart right now for cleaning and some corrosion removal. Im not reall too worried but looking for information. I plan on mounting it on a wall, my Great Grandfather scratched his name on the stock and its just a neat family heirloom. He died in 1934.
