Belgium Federal Police Select new pistol

For almost the same price, S&W MP with carry kit that comes with many extras is such a good deal compare to Glock.

I wish Glock sells carry kit package as well. Do they?

It looks like many good opinions go to Glock.

It's too bad Glock's look so... dated. I think they need an update. Now if you excuse me, I'll go put my flameproof coveralls on. ;)

meh... smith and wesson is aggressively trying to get back into the law enforcement market... smith won the contract because it was the CHEAPEST and they will manufacture the gun with any safety configuration that the dept requires...glock dosent do that...thats why they are loosing the market rapidly...lol still makes me lough because glocks are 300K plus on back order according to police ordnance...i still stick to my glocks...i dont need the mag disconnect bull s**t or optional safety lever... i prefer my guns simple and easy to use because i dont decide my purchases on risk management principles like most big departaments out there do

Glock offers huge discounts to get police contracts as well. Nothing new there. Order 20,000 pistols from S&W or Glock and you might get a pretty good deal from them. M&P's come without the mag disconnect and safeties. Some need &/or like one or both. My PRO has neither. The biggest advantage the M&P has over the Glock is the grip choices IMHO. Too, it is a very good design.

The only reason S&W won the bid is because if you read the spec's for bid is that glock was not even in the running due to the fact the glock does not have a thumb safety, so cheer all you want that S&W "won" the bid.... but they did not "beat" glock at all.

Another Ford v Chevy debate. Both Glocks and M&P's are good weapons, but they have different features.

Personally I'm an M&P fan, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't carry a Glock if I had to.

Do you still have to squeeze the trigger to remove a Glock slide ? I know that is a minus point for some who select for the 'lowest common denominator'. (See recent events in the UK)

Well if they don't have the features Belgium wanted then it would seem Glock lost the opportunity to bid on the contract. Which is no surprise. The Glock is an old design on its fourth attempt to get it right.:D Offering models and features the marketplace is asking for reflects a company who knows it's marketplace and does not want to sell into a narrow vertical market.

The S&W is a good contender. Personally I think S&W seriously dropped the ball with it between the early guns and now, but the word is that they are taking it seriously again and fixing the issues.

I definitely agree that it's an advantage to offer options, but that's mainly an advantage for the company. An individual user can tailor their skill set to whatever gun they like, so for me personally, it doesn't make a lot of difference if the people who build my gun also build it with a bunch of different options that I didn't want.

But I am glad that they are trying to sort out their problems, because the more competition, the better.

At the moment, I think the M&P series is at least as good as the Gen 4 Glocks, but the 9mm S&Ws are having accuracy issues from the early-unlocking barrel, I believe.

I think the .40 and .45 options are not suffering from this and as a result I believe they're equivalent or better guns than the G22 and 21 - although I think the Gen 3s make this harder to tell.

I consider these guns roughly equivalent, is what I am trying to say. Whichever fixes their fleas first gets my vote.

I will say this: the M&P was a step forward from the Glock when it debuted. If S&W had worked hard on it, consistently, it would have been a better pistol than the Glock, I think. And that is mainly because they looked at the deficiencies of the Glock and tried to correct them. So there is real value in being responsive to customer demands. Hopefully the gun will continue to improve, if for no other reason that it will force Glock to get their #### together.

Mags: the polymer covered steel of the Glock is a real bonus. I have never had an issue in 4 calibers of Glocks with feed lips. Lots of drops with full or partially full mags to concrete and never an issue. The only thing I've busted with a Glock mag is one follower had the portion for the slide stop break.

Early M&P mags were garbage, which admittedly they have since fixed.
I think exposed steel lips in general offer up a potential achilles heel.

Barrels: I'm convinced the barrel steel used in Glocks are superior, as is the polygonal rifling - just my gut on the steel quality though. Finish on glock barrels is superior.

Slides: finish, wearability - put 10k though each gun with constant in out of a holster and compare the difference between the two. That Glock tenifer finish is the best in the business.

The finish they have been using for almost the last 2 years now is NOT the same as it used to be...not sure if it is just as good or not tho.
