Bench Rest Scope Advice

Let's say I am going to be shooting 6mm BR at 100 to 500 yards. Small group size is the goal. What do you guys recommend in "the best for the cheapest" category. Magnification? tube diameter? Model? in a Leupold, Bushnell... I don't know what other brands ma bey name some for me. I am not interested in "stupid expensive" or "to cheap to work right" but affordable.

Weaver t-36 or t-24, sightron, bushnell 10x 3200 for starters....
 
I don't think many benchrest shooters use a 10x scope. Something in the fixed 24-40 range is what you want like the T-36 as mentioned above.

Check out the Guns of the Week on www.6mmbr.com and see what the benchrest guys are using. Not everyone has a $1500 Leupold 36x BR scope on their rigs.

What is stupid expensive? It's all relative to your cash flow, for some people $500 is stupid expensive for others $2000 may be.
 
I see Tony Boyer won the super shoot with an unaltered factory Leupold competition. It is going to depend on what your gun weighs. Mine is 10 1/2 pounds with a Leupold 36D so I would have to shorten all my barrells to make weight.
My leupold scopes hold two range records so I think they are not really needing to be replaced.
You see weaver 36 and sightron 36 at most of the matches, but most of them are locked. Whether that is necessary or not, I can't say as I have never owned one.
If you can afford a full blown bench gun the scope is not the place to save money. By a little smart car to drive to the matches, that will save you way more money than anything else and not effect your group.

For my purposes I would not spend over $700 quite a bit less would be better. More than that is simply too much to lay out for a passing fancy.


That 6mmbr web site shows a few of those Weavers on the guns of the week.
 
I use a Weaver T-36 on one of my rifles and they are definitely the best bang for the buck. Used in Canada they can be got for $500 or less.
 
I agree with the Weaver T-36 as "best buy", I use two of them and I like 'em, I also use new Leupold Competition 40s and 45s and would recommend them at double the price of the Weavers, also worth looking at is the Bushnell elite 6500 4.5-30 power. The three are $600,$900,$1300+.....depends on your wallet/wife.

Variable power has some advantages for me. Get's a little windy on the prairie
and can't keep a 36 from moving to much, so turning it down makes it a lot
easier at times.

Find the one closest to your price range used on EE you usually get twice what you would if you buy new. Remember Leupolds have absolutely the BEST warranty period. you can't go wrong with the Leupold, at all
