bench shooting a 458win?

I've only ever shot this thing while out in the open wilderness but when I go to Montreal for vacation I plan on trying it out at a range. I was just wondering what to expect from shooting it off a bench. I was reading the thread in regards to the heaviest recoiling rifles people have shot and I've noticed a lot said that the guns kicked more from bench shooting. After about 3-4 boxes of 458win over the past month or so since I got the gun, the recoil has become quite manageable for me. However, I am a bit hesitant to try shooting it at the range. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and it's going to have a scout scope so I won't be getting any (more) half moon tattoos on the forehead :redface: Thanks.
 
................if your asking, wondering or thinking about what it will be like, you have all ready set yourself up for a flinch as far as i am concerned. Do yourself and the game you will be hunting a favour and grab a rifle you will shoot accurately and humanely.

............You hip shooting a .458 Win Mag and taking video of it pretty much tells me you are treating the .458 Win Mag as a stunt or novelty.

..............And yes, shooting a .458 Win Mag from the bench is going to knock the piss out of you.:D

This one shot was the only one that I have taken where aim was not a factor. For every other shot, I have always aimed first. Inhumane hunting is not something that I support and enjoy seeing. I am not in this for the novelty factor at all. Wasting a life or taking it in a poor fashion is wrong in all senses of the word and is something that I have never wanted to see or experience myself.
A while back there was a video of some super long distance hunting and people mentioned that it would give a bad example to new hunters that you could just take this gear and start hunting at 1km away with great results. I agreed with this and thought that the video probably shouldnt have even been put up on cgn.
Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence in my morals and standards about hunting...
 
..................I just get a laugh out of some people that need to shoot big bores for the prestige of it. I saw a fella last year shooting a .338 off the bench and was flinching terribly. The best part was when he had a misfire and he almost fell off the seat anticipating the recoil.:D
 
Well the only flinching Ive done with this gun is the day I got it and took it out to shoot. So far the largest cal gun I had shot was my Tikka .270 so this was definately something different. After the 10 minutes of prayers and nervous shakes I took that first shot. Since then I havent had any problems shooting it and Ive been able to keep it on target. I did not buy it to compensate for anything or to justify my manhood. I bought it to use against polar bears up here in Nunavut. For my regular hunting needs, I do have other guns which are much more suitable for the jobs. If you want to talk about prestige guns, just look at these guys with their 50cal bmg rifles. $5000+ on a single gun that is complete overkill for any animal on Canada and is used mainly for paper punching at extreme distances.

Jeremy, shooting your 458 off the bench should be no problem with a scout scope. Set your rest up as high as posible as opposed to scrunched over leening into it. As for big bores after you've hunted and shot/loaded for most standard calibers it only seems natural to move to the top end. Small rounds no longer interest me. I hunt deer with my 338 and go up from there. Do you need big bores, definatly not. Are they fun and do they kill real good? You bet. I absolutly do not want to start a pissing match on the merits of smaller calibers I know they work great this is just my personal preferance.

One thing that will help a lot for recoil reduction is to place a sandbag between the rifle 's butt and your shoulder. I do this all the time, and by adding this weight to the rifle, it changes things immensely.

I suggest this in case you wish to fire the rifle for group size potential testing...

I forgot to add, a Past recoil pad under your jacket makes all the difference off the bench. You can shoot as many rounds as your brain will take( no shoulder pain) have fun.
 
Don't you need a high jump crash matt to place behind your chair & smelling salts for the medics to use? :D
Seriously though, shove some stuff under your jumper(the the shoulder area of course!) and cuddle up.
It doesn't recoil anymore than normal.
Difference is you recoil less. ;)

Now why is he set up for a flinch? because he's shot a few boxes? Tell me from your vast bigbore experience why 3 boxes of 458 ammo cause a jump?
And secondly, what would you consider a good rifle to shoot accurately and humanely?
My answer is
A rifle your practiced and comfortable shooting, regardless of cal...

Some people are comfortable shooting a 458, assuming Jeremy isnt is just an assumption on your part. Because your not comfortable with a cal, doesnt mean the owner isnt.

I take all my guns for granted, and shoot them as novelties... Does that make me bad? We shoot balloons all the time from the hip... Its fun, you should pull the priss out of your ass, and try it some time...

Jeremy, be careful not to lean too much into the gun. and seat it high in your shoulder pocket on your collarbone... I've done it, and it hurts like hell...
Sit comfortable, and vertical, and it wont be bad...

.................To me if you are wondering what the kick or recoil is like you are worried all ready. Being worried what it feels like may cause you to flinch. Its a big bore, its gonna kick for christ sake.

.............Jealous??? No, i can load my guide gun up if i feel the need to shake the earth. Or let er rip with my 10 gauge.

................Its only a big bore no big deal. If you wanna test "Priss" factor lets hit Valemount or Mcbride sometime and i'll take you up 6000 ft on a sled and hopefully it won't be a chopper bringing you back down.:D

.............but then we all get our jollies from different things i guess. ooooooooh you shoot a big bore from the hip. Do you twirl your levers as well??:rolleyes:
 
The 300 Win Mag has a slightly longer case then the 458 win mag, but otherwise, except for the bullets, is identical!!

I disagree. I had a Ruger #1 in 458 and it wasn't bad at all from the bench. More like a big shove on your shoulder than sharp recoil and that was using maximum handloads.

Now the Browning 375 H&H that SuperCub had a few years ago, that's a different story...........:eek: .
 
Gibbs505 - a CGN member has just acquired the biggest, baddest boy on the block. The Gibbs, 50-140's, and .500 Jefferys will cower in fear! I won't ruin it for him...he can post pictures when he wants, but be forewarned...it is a beast!:eek: :D
