Gibbs505 - a CGN member has just acquired the biggest, baddest boy on the block. The Gibbs, 50-140's, and .500 Jefferys will cower in fear! I won't ruin it for him...he can post pictures when he wants, but be forewarned...it is a beast! :D

Looking forward to seeing it!!

................Its only a big bore no big deal. If you wanna test "Priss" factor lets hit Valemount or Mcbride sometime and i'll take you up 6000 ft on a sled and hopefully it won't be a chopper bringing you back down.:D

Im game, Im just at home on a sled, or ATV... I ride more than most, summer and winter. It wouldnt be me coming down in a chopper, I guarantee. :D :D

.............but then we all get our jollies from different things i guess. ooooooooh you shoot a big bore from the hip. Do you twirl your levers as well??
Yeah, we do get our "jollies" from different things...
Like spearhunting for wild boars.
If someone wants to hipshoot a 458, whats your problem with it?
Dont hate because you cant twirl a lever.

Well..........I maybe know exactly how Jeremy's Rifle will feel
I've Shot it from about every position I could think of :D
No worries Jeremy.....She's a PussyCat :)
Take the advice about "position" mentioned and you'll be okay....
.....sit upright, relax, and don't forget to breath ;)
As far as 458's go......your's is about as Gentle on the shoulder as they get.

Jeremy as other ppl have said, take your time ,relax and breathe, the smallest caliber i shoot of a bench is my 340 wby.It kicks but not to bad but i took the brake off a buddies 378 wby and took the redfield scope full to the forehead and proceeded to fire another 18 rounds just cause it was his ammo and i am still here!! 2 ppl wanted to get me to the hospital but i refused cause i dont like stitches.
If you really want to try a kicker i have a 7.5 lb rigby loaded HOT and i am talkin bout i cant keep it on my shoulder and thank god for shooting glasses cause every time i fire it it comes off my shoulder and rides underneath my armpit and the scope drives the glasses into my head. Now that is recoil and i still wonder how my retinas are still attached to my eyes?
Above all if you are worried just work some loads up,get used to the recoil and smack a polar bear with it and dedicate the pics to us cgn members that will probably never get a chance to experience the hunt..take care...Ice:)

Now that is a great suggestion!!:D :D :D

.458wm recoil

The .458wm has somewhat more 'punch' than a .45-70, the recoil seems a little more. Only a little, that's possibly because most .458's are heavier and as such, the added weight helps absorb the recoil. Pull it in firmly, squeeze & 'enjoy' its manageable:) . I have two, a Win. model 70 & Brno ZKK 602. One IS enough or at least all I can justify:rolleyes: , so, the Brno is going up for sale. Have fun & good luck.:)

I understand the appeal. Shooting many many smallbore rounds into tiny little holes, or misting gophers is fun, but sometimes, you just want to try something with a little more power. Not for any useful reason, but just because. Then afterwards, go back to the little stuff.

Somethines it's just really gratifying to put a big hole in the backboard, hear the potent 'WHAP' of the bullet striking the backstop, and stir up an unnecessarily large cloud of dust.

I dunno. I guess it's something you either 'get' or don't.

To each his own

Bench rest .458wm

I like both, small bore and the big 'stuff'. I've mentioned I'll sell one 458 but I have to keep the other. I explained to the wife, I need at least one. If we homestead, I could use it for clearing land.:)

Well I am supposed to be going on a couple whale hunts here in Salluit this summer. If I do end up going, I'll take the 458 for sure! Plus any pics will be dedicated to my fellow cgn'ers who rock like there's no tomorrow :D

Win94 -

I do not understand your attitude at all. Jeremy asked a simple question pertaining to shooting his rifle from the bench. Why is this cause for caustic remarks? Because you know all about shooting? If so why not give some useful advice - rather than indulging in a personal attack? If you have tried powerful rifles and don't like them, it's fine to say so, but say it and leave it there. A big bore shooter who has invested the time and money to train himself in the discipline of his choice - as Jeremy is doing - is certainly no less a woodsman, hunter, or marksman, than the individual who is too stupid, lazy, or inept to learn how to shoot in the first place.

Thanks for the support Boomer. When I first posted this topic, I was hoping for some informative and useful advice. However knowing the rep of some cgn'ers, I should have expected the usual bashing and ignorance. Oh well. At least for myself, I am trying to better my own skills and get more comfortable shooting the different guns that I own. That way when I do go out to shoot an animal with one, I can have the confidence that I'll be able to take the animal with minimal or zero suffering involved. If you guys don't want to support a fellow cgn'er in his efforts to improve, then please by all means sh*t up.
