Bench tops at Princess Auto

2" piece of MDF works great

Me i glue and screw 2 thickness of 3/4" mdf 24X72 inch togetter it's so stiff I use my reloading bench for crafting leatherr and no mattter how strong I blow my hammer its never move, I put 6 coat of floor varnish over to make it waterproof

See the local PA has bench tops in the surplus section. Heavy units, anybody used one for a bench? Needing a new bench for myself.

Is it thick and heavy? Just about anything that is at least 1.5 inch thick, is solid and stiff and heavy will do just fine. It will still want support stretchers between the legs for the best support. But if it's thick, heavy and doesn't wobble around when you handle it then it'll be a fine top for a bench.

Found it on their site. Specs at 1.6", 1.5" mdf with Melamine top. 8'x2'. Think I might try to get a couple. $35

In that case if I were going to hammer on it on occasion or mount a reloading press near the edge I think I'd laminate it to a 3/4" fir plywood lower layer. MDF doesn't do well with point loads.
