Bench Vise.

Good old “ Record “ vises solidly mounted to left over chunks of paralaminate plates so they can be moved around as needed. Held in place with strong c-clamps when neccasary. Really helps when the bench is well anchored to the wall. I cover my work benches in galvanized sheet steel for easy clean up and durability.

Hello,

Not sure if this is the best spot for this but I'll ask anyways feel free to move if not.

I got a vise as a birthday present and I'm in the process of building a bench for gunsmithing and other things.

I was wondering what is the best thickness of top for this style of vise?

There is nothing in the box to say what is the minimum or maximum thickness and it doesn't even come with bolts, nuts and lock washers....

Thanks for the input!

Many years ago a Friend of mine moved and asked me if I wanted a halve sheet of 5/8 Steel plate he had in his shop.
Well this 8*2 ft. sheet, heavy as hell became my Workbench Top, just an absolute joy to work on it.

Btw. As others have suggested a Vice should always be mounted on a corner and over a sturdy Leg. Best to clamp a piece of square tubing into the Vice hanging down. This will tell you how far out you have to mount the Vice so the Table top is not in the way.

Cheers
