Maybe dumb question but.....

If I was to grind or machine off the bluing on a 1911 handgun, would it turn shiny ? I assume it would so how would I stop the rust ?

Could I preserve this look with something ?

Is there another way to remove the bluing ?

Any help is apreciated.

If the purpose of the exercise is to get a shiney silver finish on your pistol you could get it nickle plated.. From your description of how you would remove the blueing might I suggest a good pistol-smith? The best way is probably with a heated chemical bath...never mind send it to a gunsmith.

MOST CERTINALY! BIRCHWOOD CASEY BLUE AND RUST REMOER. Wipe on, wipe off......that simple.

What kind of finish does this process leave me with ?

Well as a matter of fact I can mill the bluing off, not a hard thing to do, and I don't want to take it to a smith cause I want something to do myself, I am just looking for a little info on what it will look like when the bluing is removed in a certain way.IE milling, grinding, or chemical. I know milling will leave me with a shiny stainless like finish and I can polish it from there if I want high gloss. If chemical leaves me with a comparable finish, then maybe thats the way to go, depending on if I decide to leave some bluing in certain areas or not, kinda like the "Eclipse" look.

In the end I still have to find a way to protect this finish from rust....if thats possible.
Any ideas???

After you remove the blueing by any method, rusting will be a problem. You will have to keep the bare steel coated with a rust inhibiting oil......messy.
DO NOT remove the blueing by any mechanical abrading/cutting process......you will screw up the looks and the tolerences of all the parts!!! This is exactly what the blue removing chemical solution is for, it works like a hot damn!
If you want a metallic lustre surface, by all means have your frame and slide chromium or nickel plated, and leave the small external pieces such as the slide lock, safety, trigger, and hammer blued for a cool "Eclipse" look.

The finish is Bluing...you remove the Bluing, you remove the finish, ergo your gun is "in the white" and you have no finish. If you want it shiny, chrome plate it.
