How will an aftermarket oprod benefit me and my rifle? Will my rifle last longer, or shoot straighter? I've heard it makes the action cycle smoother, but there's nothing rough about my action, it works fine everytime I pull the trigger. I'm just a novice recreational shooter, will I get a decent return on investment?

You'll get the "best" return on your investment if...
(1) you replace the crappy wood stock
(2) replace the rear sights if your gonna use the irons...
(3) replace the op-rod-guide-rod with the nice stainless one marstar or Rooster33 sells... other make them to I believe...
Everything else is just gravy... and, some guys who did the whole "sha-bang" didn't notice a big change from all the investment... It is after all, a battle rifle... If it's minute of "target" at the distance your shooting, then it's working... I believe some of the guys here stated that the M14 the USA was using was acceptable at 5 or so inches at 100 yards!!! My three all shoot around 1.5 at 100 meters...

The op rod spring guide (The piece inside the spring ),shim or unitize the gas system, Fiberglass stock, polish the gas piston ,rear site assembly only if yours is mushy,bed the stock,change op rod spring to USGI ,NM ream the flash hider .All these upgrades are better for the money than changing the op rod in my opinion .
If you want to get the bare minimum ,buy a shim set and shim the gas system, replace the spring guide with a NM type, and the stock change (The Chinese wood is very soft and easily compresses) and a USGI op rod spring if you can find one . Here in the U.S. ,you can do this for under $70 .This might cost you a little more in Canada.

If I "had" my camera here, I could "visually" show you... I'd take a pic of the original rod installed and then the aftermarket one installed....
But... since I don't... here is my best "typed" explanation...
Accuracy is determined by MANY factors... With semi's, consistancy is an important factor... So, if you can consistantly have the action operate in the "same" manner, then you will see that in your group size... Remember, just a small variation in ALOT of variables will cause changes... Your replacing the op-rod will take "some" of those variables out of the situation...
Confusing enough??? In short, it keeps the spring in a nice "controlled" state, not all over the place like the factory part does... It looks like a friggen snake down the rod... for lack of a better way of describing it...

These are two very different items, with about a $200 difference in price.
Sounds to me like Jay is talking about the Op-rod spring guide.....not an op-rod.
Changing op-rod spring guide......improvement = YES
Changing op rod.........unless yours is bent, a USGI re-weld, improvement = NO
Plain and simple......Norc op-rods are as good as GI.......so If it's worn out, replace it. I have never needed to replace an op-rod....yet. I do have some used and NEW GI ones in case I do.....odds are.....I won't ever used them.
GI or Norc spring guides.....flat metal....NM are round = better.
