So I was ready to buy a Mapleridge Armoury Matrix Aerospace M762D in the end of april 2020 then the BAN came out.

I want a semi-auto short barrel because I hunt at close range, less than 100m. I curently hunt with a Sako A7 7mm Rem Mag and find it too long for the terrain I have. I'm looking at the Benelli ARGO E Battue but the bright orange stock and handgard would need a cerekote job. Seems hard to find in Canada right now. So :

1. What do you think of this rifle.
2. Not much aftermatket parts for these, any idea?
3. I'm leaning over 30-06 but 308 would be powerfull enough at close range, any toughts?

Thanks

What about a Remington 742 in .308 or 30.06? What are you hunting under 100yds that you are concerned that those calibers are not sufficient?

It is mainly for moose hunting. I've hunt with 30-06 before and know it is a good one. Never used a 308 other than at the range. I dont own a 308 gun.

308 is about 100fps less than 30-06, so with good bullets and good bullet placement moose shouldn’t see a difference!! I have a few friends that bag moose every year up here with 270 and 308 w/o issues!! Plus 308 should get you a little shorter action so rifle overall length should be a little shorter!

The Benelli are good guns, picked this one up from a shop in NFLD a few years ago for $900 new. They had crazy cheap prices on everything pretty much. It's a 308 and runs great, MOA after it settled in around 100 rounds.

I'd take a 742 for free but ,I'd have a real hard time trading any money for one.

I know that some of them can be picky. I had a carbine in 30.06 that always worked well and was "ok" for accuracy. It was a 7400. I got rid of it because it was a pig to carry around. I find the pump version 760/7600 nicer to carry, more accurate and almost as fast.

I ran a carbine ARGO for a bunch of years just after they came out and killed a truck load of deer with it. Mine ran like a top and never gave me any issues. The one thing to remember with these is to make sure the the fore end screw is tight or else they have been known to shift POI if it loosens up. For a hunting semi, I personally think that they are one of if not the best out there. Mine was in 30-06 and it was only fed Federal Fusion 165gr factory loads. Mine always ran despite being full of snow, rain or dust from chest carry on the atv. I did do a full strip and clean if it got really dirty from the weather, but other than that it is a fine high quality rifle.

A question for anyone who owns one: Any shift in POI after disassembly for cleaning? I found a couple of reviews online that claimed they had experienced POI shift of several inches after they took them apart, cleaned them, and put them back together.

I had one in 30-06. Excellent firearm.

Why do you want aftermarket parts?

Either caliber will be fine for moose under 100 yards.

Should I go with a picatiny rail or go with traditional mount? Hunting moose at max 100m, would a 3X fixed good. I use a 3-9 40mm burris on my Sako A7.

I have a Argo E-Pro and Argo E Battue, both in .308.

I love them both. Seriously. Reliable, unique, easy to disassemble. Both are handy and the Battue is really easy to carry around all day, or to sit in a blind or tree stand with. Open fibre sight are excellent. A ton of fun. The semi auto action and the progressive comfort recoil system really eats up the recoil.

I don't think you'll find much in the way of aftermarket parts. 308 / 30-06....both will handle almost anything within 100 years with a good quality bullet. I prefer .308 for a little less recoil and bark. PM me if you have any other questions. Cheers.
