Hello folks,

Santa blessed me with a significant gift card to Cabelas and I’ve got shotguns in mind. I want to try trap shooting and hopefully waterfowl in the near future.

Can anyone tell me much about these 3 options?

Benelli Super Vinci-probably a little outside my budget. Old design, I’ve seen some reviews that say the action to stock fit is a little sloppy.

Benelli Bellmonte-can’t seem to find any info at all in English. Has anyone actually handled one of these? I think it’s leading the pack just for the name and price.

Weatherby Element- cheap and well reviewed. I fear it will be a little more clunky as a Turkish rebrand.

Keep in mind I’m completely new to shotgunning and looking for real world experience to hopefully make a choice that will keep me happy.

Thank you,

Brad

Research shotgun fit, not just length of pull, but drop at comb and cast as well, as they can effect your point of impact significantly. Then buy a gun that fits you.

If you are just starting out I would recommend the Weatherby simply because of cost. If you shoot a few rounds of Trap and decide you want to pursue it further you can always flip the Weatherby for something nicer, the Weatherby should retain a good portion of its value for resale. Also, once you are out at a few Trap events you will be surprised at how many people will offer to let you try different guns. Always nice to shoot something before you buy lol. This year was my first year of Trap, I bought an affordable Churchill 812 over/under to try it out. The Trap community in the Fraser Valley has been absolutely fantastic and I’ve tried at least a dozen guns from others this year. My Churchill has been dead nuts reliable and I haven’t felt the need to upgrade yet, you may find the same with the Weatherby if you buy it. I tried one about a month ago and it was more than adequate and totally enjoyable.
I also picked up a cheap Winchester SXP pump as a backup and it crushes clays very well for very little money lol. I lent it to a fellow who was shooting Trap for the first time ever with a Tactical behemoth of a gun. He shot a 5/25 with his tactical shotgun on his first round and a 20/25 on his second round with my SXP!
Good luck no matter what you purchase and maybe we will see you out on the trap field some day

Let’s add Beretta A300 Ultima to the list as well, I see they’re on sale too!

The Beretta A300 is a good gun, I prefer gas guns over Inertia. If a Beretta A400 is within your budget the more modern Gas system and Barrel choke system is an upgrade over the A300. The A400 is a popular Clay target gun. Close your eyes shoulder and see where the rib and bead are related to your eye. Theres stock shims that you cant adjust the drop a bit
