Benelli M2 v. M4

I have also owned both. Sold the M2 tactical awhile back. I still have two M4`s, One full size the other 14" Entry model.
The M2 in my opinion was a very accurate shotgun with slugs...almost rifle like. It is inertia driven as opposed to gas system on M4. It depends on what you are looking for that will ultimately decide your choice. You can get a very minty used M4 for about the price of a new M2 Tactical if price matters.
I was just at Wanstalls picking up a G17 Glock and they had no M2`s but did have an M4.
Reliable sometimes has these in, check with Shane.
International out here in Surrey is another good choice.....their prices are usually very good too.
Go to Italian if they have the M2 and "try it on". If you like it, nothing says you gotta buy it there...order it from P&D or any other reputable online dealer who has stock.

Sorry for that delayed reply. Yes that's the one I have. From what I can gather, the use of slugs with a modified choke is a no-no unless using Brenneke style slugs.

NOTE: This applies to the M4 'Entry' model with the 14.5" barrel, non-removable chokes.

I emailed some questions about the slugs and modified choke to Stoeger Canada, they distribute the Benelli product in Canada. Here are the replies:
"The choke is “modified” and is marked as such on the barrel. The general recommendation is that slugs should not be used in a choke tighter than improved cylinder. This would apply to this model as well. In the guns we use for demos, we have used several varieties of 2 ¾” buckshot without a problem."
"A slug would be, nominally, bore diameter. A modified choke has, nominally, .020” constriction (smaller than bore diameter). Benelli certainly won’t tell you to fire a slug thru a modified choke. It is quite possible that a shooter could fire slugs thru a modified choke forever without damaging anything but it’s equally possible the first slug down the barrel could bulge or split the barrel at or near the muzzle."

When it's brand new maybe. I have run hundreds of one ounce 3 dram shells without cleaning or heavy lubrication without any problems. When it was brand new I did have a few failures to eject but a couple boxes of slugs and buckshot seem to have broken it in. Now it doesn't matter if it's low recoil or #8 target loads, the gun shoots everything. In my experience M4s aren't as picky about ammo as some people think, at least mine isn't.
Oh and they are very easy to point and keep on target in rapid fire.
They are totally worth the price.There must be some of them that take longer to break in, my M4 strait stock (after the first 50 slugs 2and 3/4 ) will feed anything from trap to full load with no hiccup, only put a few drops of oil after shooting session, no wonder it was chosen by the US Marines... JP.

Remember that with both the M2 and M4, the magazine capacity limit is 5x 3" shells...
Meaning that as long as the 6th JUST doesn't fit in.... you're legal.
It just happens to fit 6 2.75" shells. Oh well. It was designed for 3".

Didn't want to railroad this thread but I think it is fairly old but still on my topic. I have the hankering for a "tactical" minded shotgun, however I currently own the Benelli M2 Field model in 12 G with the 28" Vent rib. I love the gun for clays, pretty sure it'll kill many birds, and could obviously do in a pinch if something needed killin'
My question is... would I be better off spending the money to import a 18.5" barrel and be able to have a multi-purpose gun... or would I be better off selling and getting an M4 and look "silly" when doing other shotgun related shooting sports?
I guess another alternative is getting a Supernova Tactical and keeping the M2...
Opinions?

SN Tactical is beginning to look favourable.
I keep thinking of the M2 barrel, then get worried about weight overload when adding a light or extension.

If you like the way your M2 works for clays and bird hunting, you'll hate the M4 for that. Why import a barrel? Talk to Wolverine Supplies, they could probably get you an 18.5" bbl., but be prepared to pay around $600.
I've had an M2 Field with slug bbl & 28" bbl. and an M4. Both are now gone, but if I had to do it over, I'd buy an M2 Tactical and extra 28" bbl. The M4 is the coolest looking shotgun made IMO, but it sucks for anything that flies.
If I were to get the 18.5", and then got a extended tube to match the length (neutered of course for 5 rds) could I get away with the coupler that has the light mount on it?
Wolverine said they listed the 28" but couldn't get in the 18.5" - I suspect if I asked for a special order it may be possible. Seems that the cost for the barrel and a Supernova is similar... which is my dilemma atm.
You should be good but the price and time may not make it worth it

The SN Combo sounds like a good idea too. Not sure I'm prepared to let go of my M2... Tempting...
