Benelli M4 will not cycle light loads. SOLVED ON POST 23

Thanks.

I never knew what dram was until I heard it on this thread, I will take a look at my boxes.

It used to be a measure of black powder. Now they use it as a comparison for how heavy the load is. The shells in the pic are a 3 dram equivalent, which is a semi-heavy trap load or a light field load.

Could problems be caused by maybe not having a good shooting stance? Kinda of the limp wristing effect, not saying you do but mine cycled everything and it cant really be 'special'

Mine really loved the S&B 2 5/8 target slugs, I was shooting one ragged hole at 25 yards a big ragged hole :)

I love this thing!

Update:

Gun now works!
Went out to Bass Pro and found the correct loads.

-Winchester 12 Gauge Game loads
-2 3/4"
- #7 1/2 or #8 lead shot
- 3 1/4 Dram. This was the magic ingredient that gave it enough force to operate the action.

Tried out 50 shells and it worked flawlessly. Reasonably cheap to boot.

Thanks All, I appreciate the help.

I dont see the fix. Have you tried light target loads again?

The fix was a more powerful load (3 1/4 dram).....3 dram worked for me, and once you fire a few hundred of these loads, I bet the lighter ones will work as well once your gun "breaks in"...

Funny but thats not a fix, what part exactly is breaking in?? I dont see anywhere it stating that the M4 cant fire target loads except from some users.

I think it has more to do with having a soft shoulder.

The problem was not greasing it up when he got it new. I got mine new, greased it up and never had any problems with federal and remignton cheap target loads. If you run it with some light clp or the packing oil thats left inside it will hiccup with the light target loads off the start.

Nope, that was not the case at all.

All the packing grease was stripped out and replaced with a quality oil.

My new M4 is giving me this kind of grief too but I haven't greased anything. I'll strip it down and slap some "gun butter" on it. Also, I was thinking of having it fitted with a modified choke. Sound like a plan ??

As to this thing needing heavier loads, I don't get it. Isn't that what those *^@# $1,000.00 + pistons are supposed to be for ?

This time of year with the cold temps I'd stay away from excess lubricant, especially "gun butter" or the like.

Use Break-Free or something that leaves a thin Teflon film and wipe of excess.

I had an M4 and it functioned flawlessly with light loads. My Beretta semi-auto's work well in -30 and colder, but they have very little lube.

If you're still having issues, I'd get the gun checked out.

It does not need heavy loads, no where does it state light loads wont cycle. Grease the bolt rails ( I use TW25 ) and get a good stance.

I`ve fired nothing but light loads from day one.

Thanx bearkilr. As others have experienced, my M4 will flawlessly spit slugs and though I haven't yet tried buckshot (the gun is NEW) I expect that would work too but with #4 WalMart and less, the gun only cycles occasionally. I've got a 14 1/2" barrel. What do you think of the modified choke idea ? In theory that should help, and give a little better range no ?

OK, I just googled and found this:

I actually tested mine with a mod choke against my Beretta 28" with mod choke, both shooting 3" Challenger steel BB. Near identical patterns at about 35 yards if I remember.
I don't know know if the 14.5" bbl. would make a difference, I had the 18.5". Probably a bit less velocity, the pattern should be similar.
Bbl. length or choke should have no effect on function/jamming.

So you are trying to tell me that it would not hold up even two or three shots? Because thats how long it takes for the gun to jam with the low power loads.

Regardless, The more powerful shells work, so thats good enough for me.
