Benelli mr-1 pencil thin barrel...

The ergos I found were okay with varying sling systems in store. Haven't shot it yet.

Military carbine, I agree, not it's purpose. More tweaking would be needed in order to make it more "Hard Use".

Police/LE/Patrol carbine. I could see it in time with a bit of evolving. For that right off the bat, a shorter barrel would be needed, and a thicker one at that for in/out of the car or trunk.

And the sighting system could use some tweaking. Im interested in using an Aimpoint PRO or the Comp M2.

As a HD or Civilian purpose rifle, it fills the niche nicely.

I had to chuckle at the Mini 14 comment, but nodded as I can see that. I like the Mini 14.

Again, this isn't an AR or similar styled carbine, so it can't fill that niche. Much like the Mini 14/30. You can spend all you want on it and dress it up to look like an AR, but it still isn't one and never will be.

The MR1 and R1 I think are good "Sheepdog" carbines.

The more I think of it, I think Id like to see a thicker barrel.

It does fine with low magnification optics. I was gonna go with a Burris AR332 but settled on a Millet DMS-1.

Like I've said before, due to weight and length of this rifle, I built mine more like a DMR styled gun. Can be used close close in cqb style, but with an optic that allows it to take advantage of its range what with 20" barrel and all. I think the new styled low magnification optics 1x-4x or 3x with CQB dots etc etc are perfect for this gun.

Again, the weight is a result of the HEAVY DUTY piston system. Honestly, the piston system is a BEAST I would wager its reliability is hands down with the very very best of them. Its a tradeoff.

Would a good red dot like the Comp M2/PRO be a good fit if then paired with a magnification component?

^I think it would do well as a longer range rifle, like the R1 brother for hunting.

The lack of a rail underneath is a pain. Having to mill away material from under the hand guard is not something I want to do in order to add a full length rail. The underside looks like it's not flat.

A Magpul AFG would look good here.

When mounting, be aware you will need EXTRA-HIGH rings to clear the iron sights. I took out my rear iron sight, and it allowed me to mount low rings.
The stock being angled the way it is, allows it to be shouldered very quickly, but gives a piss-poor cheek rest if using extra-high rings if you want to keep your irons.
I used an eagle cheek which coupled with Low rings feels perfect for myself, but again, I removed the rear irons.

As far as rail mounts, there is a propietary tri-rail mount that is available. It allows mounting stuff up front, too far forward to make use of something like an AFG or front grip. Honestly, this is a heavy rifle, your support hand will not want to be so far out. The underside is NOT flat.

Here is a pic to give you an idea if you wanted to "pimp" it out a bit.

Still looks good regardless. You have a nice piece there.

Maybe not a "build" rifle, but still a viable and very competetive option. Thinking it more, Id like to see a different barrel stock. Some sort of full railed version.

I got m4 comp and it works great. Mag realize and bolt release work great for me and I cam do fast reloads no problem. Argonomics are better the ar. Feels better and you can line your iron sights naturally first time. My buddy who is a huge colt ar fan and collector said the mr1 is as good is not better. At 25 yards it can be a tack driver in rappid fire. I still have to sight my m4 red dot in for 100 yards, but from what I shot already it is very accuratte.
