I was considering buying a Benelli MR1 because its non restricted and semi auto. I noticed it comes with a 5 round magazine, I understand that 5 is the max allowed in the gun in canada but I wanted get a 30 round that have stoppers so you can only fit 5 but still keep it non restricted so I can shoot at more places then just the range. I cant seem to find anything like this or info on it, All I found is it takes M16 and AR 15 mags. Can some one shed some light on this, Will these clips be reliable in it, can I use them and still keep it non restricted, and where would I find them. I have no experience in any sort of black guns or semi auto so its all new to me.

If this is not possible I plan to just pick up a russian SKS keep it stock, and keep some 30 round clips around for worst case senarios.

Assuming it takes AR mags (I don't know), 5/30 round mags are as reliable as a straight up 5, assuming it's a quality mag to begin with. Mag size has no effect on the classification of the rifle (unless it's a fixed mag exceeding 5 minus the M1 G). The mag is the prohibited device if it holds more than 5 (unless it's a LAR 15 pistol mag then it can hold 10).

You can also consider Beowulf magazines they are AR-15 style magazines which hold 5 round .50 beowulf and can just so happen also hold like 14 .223 rounds :) or the pistol magazines that are AR-15 compatible that hold 10 rounds. All perfectly legal by our laws here in Canada.

MR1 will take any AR mag...legally pinned to 5 of course. Also try to avoid calling them "clips" that will get some negative attention :)

First off, there is a distinction between clip vs magazine. SKS surplus ammo comes on 10 round "stripper clips"... to quickly jam in the top into the SKS permanent fixed magazine. The original AND BEST magazine for the SKS is the original steel 10rd (pinned to 5 for Canada) that it came with. Plastic mags for SKS may work... but not as strong or dependable. And none of them are legal with more than 5 rounds anyway.

The Benelli you are thinking of, does indeed take same magazines as an AR-15. That is very common for 5.56 and .223 rifles. The mag it comes with may well be very short and compact. A good thing sometimes. But... you can buy more mags for it, Magpul Gen3 mags should work great... they'll still be pinned to 5 rounds, but will be full size, so you'll have a nice place to grip it, itll fit in standard pouches, and will look military.

Basically, a magazine will have a spring to push feed the rounds up to the action. A clip has no spring to push rounds any direction (but for detail oriented people they may have a small spring to keep the rounds in place).
Rifles and handguns that actually have clips, use one quality permanent magazine spring to move the rounds. The advantage of today's detacheable magazine is that if the spring gets weak or breaks, you just do a mag change and continue... while a clip based system would leave you looking for another firearm until repairs could be completed.
Generally loading by clips is slightly slower than loading by mags. The SKS and Garand make up for this in legendary reliability.

Yes the MR1 will take any AR mags. Using an AR mag does not change the classification of the rifle or change where you can shoot it. If your at the range or in the bush, you are still limited to 5 rounds for a semi auto center fire. Saying that, pistols are legal to 10 rounds and they do make AR pistols (which still use standard AR mags) so you can legally use 10 round AR pistol mags in your benelli MR1. For 10 round mags, you can use LAR15 mags, XCR mags etc..... just google 10 round AR pistol mags canada and you will get plenty of results. Or like others have said .50 beowulf mags are legal to use in that rifle as well. Those are chambered for .50 beowulf ammo, however they also fit about 14-15 rounds of .223 ammo.

If you want the look of a large ar15 mag. you have plenty of choices available however you may find those mags hard to load with 5 rounds on a closed bolt (which is normal for a pinned mag)

hope that helps.

Technically the 12.5" barrel on that last one means you don't get NR fun any more :( But that gives you an idea of the variations between these rifles!

The MR1 is Benelli's realization of Beretta's military designed Rx4

Thanks for the help guys. You guys all gave me helpful info. The .50 BEOWULF 5/10 MAGAZINES would work, and the Magpul Gen3. I feel that without the AR style magazine to hold it would feel awkward and look strange.

I appreciate the help pointing me in the right direction. Just the be sure ill post a link of what I found to make sure its correct... I believe it would work

I have bought those magpul mags from tactical products Canada (their store, not their website) and they work great in my MR1. They also drop free from the magazine housing, as opposed to the first generation magpul mags, which fit and feed fine but do not drop free.

If you end up getting the MR1, you're going to love it; the quality of workmanship give it value above and beyond what you're paying for. You'd love the SKS too, but that's a whole different animal altogether. I recommend you get them both!
