Currently saving up for my first .223 Black Rifle. i am between the XCR or MR1, i am looking to use it for some target shooting and maybe some 3/2 gun. any recommendations? or any other suggestions on a NR Black rifle in .223 or 7.62x39?

For the most part, the MR1 is a slightly tacticooled hunting semi. They're light, reliable and accurate. Controls are anal. Aftermarket is limited to what you can bolt onto the top rail and front tri-rail available for them. The XCR was designed with military contracts in mind. Controls are very similar to an AR aside from the charging handle and bolt release, both of which are good designs. Reliability is excellent but dependant on quality magazines. Kinda goes for everything mag fed though. Accuracy of newer XCR's are excellent. If looking at used, be aware that the older they are the crappier they are. Look for an ambi mag release to be sure you're getting one from a solid revision. You can send the serial # to RA or Wolverine Supplies to get the year of mfr. and revision. Don't pay top dollar for an old one. The heavy bbl XCRs are a little front heavy if you're not man enough. The gym has an effective fix for that. The light barrels are nicely balanced.

MR1 has a really light barrel and not threaded. Not great for anything other than a range toy, maybe a yote gun.

I would go ACR if money not an object. Otherwise I'd go with a higher end AR and forget about using it not at the range.

If target shooting is one of its main uses I'd go with a newer XCR if it meets your budget.

I really like having a non restricted .223 semiauto that accepts 10 shot LAR mags. It's so ridiculous our AR15 laws (range only restricted).

We need more non restricted .223 semiautos out there in the bush target shooting and hunting.

Good on ya!

The ACR for me feels the closest to an actual AR if thats what you're after. Picked mine up for 2800 Used, and a X39 kit for 800$

Pmags you say! why limit yourself to 5 rounds ? :)

Note that the MR-1 accepts STANAG-compliant mags (LAR-15 and Beowulf). As far as accessories, you just get four rails, same as the XCR: it's usually more than anyone needs. Barrel can be threaded easily enough if you really need a flash hider or compensator. Ergonomics are excellent from what I've handled. Controls are not like the AR-15, but then why should they be? Unless you're planning on having to switch from one model to the other under pressure in a life-and-death situation where quarter seconds count, does it matter? To me that's ultimately just a question of training, just like driving manual vs automatic.

The MR-1 is also slightly cheaper, I think. They're both very reliable and accurate 223 platforms from all I've read, the ARGO is known for being very smooth in operation.

Disclaimer: I own neither (though I've handled the telescopic butt MR-1 model) but I've been researching rather a lot about them lately as I'm also looking for an accurate 223 semi that won't cost $3500. MR-1 seem to be possibly the best compromise in performance/cost on the market, though it's got a bit of an odd duck look.

Its really light but build quality doesn't feel really robust.
Everything is plastic except essential parts.
Its one of the more cost effective rifles on the market that accept STANAG mags but it will probably leave you wanting more.

Thats what i was thinking! i am a lefty so bulpups are out of the question! i like the XCR or the ACR! whatever pops up in my budget first i guess is what i will get! i am looking to but a 1-4x viper on there aswell :) i am pretty excited to jump into the world of black rifles!

It's not a go fast rifle like an AR or AR type control rifle but I find mine does what I want. It can hit dinner sized plates easily and quickly out to 200+ yards with cheap bulk ball, use 10 round LAR mags and it can be taken anywhere.

Being piston driven it doesn't need to be cleaned often yet the action stays clean and reliable.

Why do guys like the ACR so much? I thought that bushmaster kind of stopped supporting them for conversion kits and what not? Or is that very wrong?

I'm curious about this as well, and no, it's not "very wrong".
I blame them video game things. Made the ACR popular beyond justification.

I've been told it's more accurate than other offerings, but nobody can actually show it.
It's heavier than most, like a KelTec wearing a brick ;), and the integrated grip, come on.
Argonomics are good, but the XCR (example only) is far ahead.

I don't get it.
